Canada 2009 - Breathtaking end

This will be my last blog post about my holiday and internship to Canada. I will fly back on Friday, the 8th of Januari, from Toronto Pearson International Airport. The flight is scheduled to leave around 6.20PM. I should be back on Dutch soil around 11:10AM local time. To finish my internship in a good way, I decided to finally view some of the beauty that the long enduring cold has created here in Hamilton and at Niagara Falls. Words simply cannot describe the sheer beauty of what one can view in Canada in wintertime, so my photographs will, once again, do the talking. Note that it was snowing quite heavily at Niagara Falls when we were there, so the photo's are of a somewhat lower quality than normal.

Dit zal mijn laatste blog post zijn over mijn vakantie en stage in Canada. Ik vlieg vrijdag, 8 Januari, vanuit Toronto Pearson International Airport terug naar Nederland. De vlucht staat gepland rond 18:20 te vertrekken. Ik zou vervolgens rond 11:10, lokale tijd, weer terug op Nederlandse grond moeten zijn. Om mijn stage in een goede manier af te sluiten heb ik besloten om eindelijk toch nog even de winterse schoonheid hier in Canada te bekijken. Aangezien het al een lange tijd onder nul is geweest, ben ik in Hamilton naar "waterige" delen geweest en naar Niagara Falls. Woorden kunnen niet goed omschrijven hoe mooi het hier is, dus ik zal wederom mijn foto's het gesprek laten voeren. Let op: Het sneeuwde vrij hevig toen we bij Niagara Falls waren, waardoor de foto's van ietswat lagere kwaliteit zijn dan normaal.

Canada 2009 - Canadian Holiday season

Since my last post, Christmas and New Year's Eve have passed, but also the end of my internship.
Sinds mijn laatste post zijn Kerstmis en Oudjaarsavond voorbij gekomen, maar tevens ook het einde van mijn stage.

End of internship/Einde van mijn stage

The 23rd was the last day of my internship. My report was finished already, so I spent the morning clearing out my office and I had a meeting planned at 11AM. This would be the final meeting with my supervisor and, to my surprise another professor had joined the meeting. Apparently my project showed enough interesting results for another professor to want to know more. We had a great meeting and I learned a couple of new things about my conclusions. In the end, I only had to edit one conclusion and the rest was approved. I had several forms for my supervisor to fill in as an end of my internship. Among them was a form where he had to grade my skills. I was graded on four different skills, namely "Planning, drive and self-reliance", "Analytical skills", "Written report" and "The colloquium". Grading went from "insufficient" up to "excellent". My supervisor was so pleased with my results and the way I performed my tasks that I was graded as "excellent" on all four levels, which gave me the grade of an A+ (10 for us Dutchies, 1 for the Germans). Couldn't be better! I was very pleased with this. After filling in all the forms my supervisor decided it was time for our "last meal". We had lunch at Williams Coffee pub (great food) and after this we said goodbye. However, I will still be in touch with McMaster and my supervisor, as my project might lead to a paper or two. Also, the option for a PhD project is still open and I'll have to make a tough decision in where I will do a PhD (assuming I will). All in all, my internship has been an incredible learning experience and I would do it all over again if I had the chance.

De 23ste was de laatste dag van mijn stage. Mijn verslag was al klaar, dus ik heb in de ochtend mijn werkplek opgeruimd en om 11:00 stond een bijeenkomst met mijn begeleider gepland. Dit zou de laatste bijeenkomst met mijn begeleider zijn. Er was echter nog een professor aanwezig bij de bijeenkomst. Blijkbaar heeft mijn project dusdanig interessant resultaten geboekt dat een andere professor besloten had mee te discussiëren. Het was een gezellig en interessante bijeenkomst en ik had ook weer wat nieuws geleerd aan het eind. Uiteindelijk hoefde ik slechts een van mijn conclusies te herzien en de rest bleek in orde. Verder had ik nog een aantal formulieren, die mijn begeleider moest invullen als afsluiting van mijn stage. Een van deze formulieren was een beoordelingsformulier. Ik moest beoordeeld worden op vier verschillende vaardigheden", namelijk "Planning, inzet en zelfstandigheid", "Analytische vaardigheden", "Geschreven verslag" en "Het colloquium (presentatie)". Beoordelingen gingen van "onvoldoende" tot en met "uitstekend". Mijn begeleider was blijkbaar dusdanig tevreden met mijn resultaten en werkhouding dat ik voor alle vaardigheden "uitstekend" heb ontvangen. Dit gaf mij als punt een "A+" (10 voor Nederlanders, 1 voor Duitsers). Dat kon dus niet beter! Ik was dan ook zeer tevreden hiermee. Na alle formulieren in te hebben gevuld besloot mijn begeleider dat het tijd was voor onze "laatste maaltijd". We hebben gelunchd in Williams Coffee pub (lekker eten) en hierna hebben we afscheif genomen. Ik zal echter nog steeds contact houden met McMaster en mijn begeleider, want mijn project leidt mogelijk tot een of twee publicaties. Verder is de optie voor een promotieproject ook nog steeds aanwezig. De beslissing waar ik een promotieproject ga doen zal niet makkelijk zijn (aangenomen dat ik er een doe). Al met al is mijn stage een geweldige leerervaring geweest en ik zou het zo weer over doen.

Christmas/Kerstmis

I celebrated Christmas without my family this year. In stead, I was invited to a dinner party at one of my roommate's former supervisors. The professor that invited me has a Belgian husband and to my surprise, the first thing I heard when entering their home was "Gelukkig kerstfeest", which is Dutch for Merry Christmas. Great! I spoke a little Dutch before switching to English, this because it would've been impolite to speak a language my hostess doesn't speak. The dinner was great and I had a wonderful time. Otherwise, I would've spent Christmas alone and this was a much better alternative.

Ik heb Kerstmis dit jaar zonder mijn familie moeten vieren. In plaats hiervan was ik uitgenodigd voor een diner bij een van mijn kamergenoot's begeleiders. De professor, die mij had uitgenodigd, bleek een Belgische echtgenoot te hebben. Ik was daarom ook verrast toen ik binnenkwam en ontvangen werd met een "Prettig Kerstfeest". Geweldig! Na wat Nederlands te hebben gesproken zijn we toch maar overgegaan op Engels, aangezien mijn gastvrouw geen Nederlands sprak. Het diner was zeer lekker en het was dan ook enorm gezellig. Dit was een vele malen beter alternatief dan Kerstmis in mijn eentje vieren.

New Year's Eve/Oudjaarsavond

This year, I celebrated New Years in Canada. To me this was a new experience compared to that celebrated in Holland. Canadians aren't legally allowed to use fireworks during this night, so all visible fireworks are coordinated. I, however, was not able to see any fireworks. Hamilton's fireworks were ignited in Burlington... and I was not there. I celebrated New Years here at my house with friends. In the evening, my roommate Mahan and several of his friends came over to celebrate it here. We had a great time and spent most of the time chatting up with each other, since we all hadn't seen each other in a while. This was great and around 2PM, they all went home. Nice to be able to celebrate New Years without all the messy fireworks like in Holland. I didn't wake up due to bangs everywhere in the neighborhood either. Great!

Dit jaar heb ik oudjaarsavond in Canada gevierd. Dit was een nieuwe ervaring vergeleken met hoe ze het in Nederland viere. Canadezen mogen namelijk geen vuurwerk afsteken tijdens de jaarwisseling. Hierdoor is er dus geen ongecoördineert vuurwerk zichtbaar. Ik heb echter geen vuurwerk gezien. Het vuurwerk dat werd afgestoken voor Hamilton, werd dit jaar afgestoken in Burlington... waar ik niet was. Ik heb oudjaarsavond dan ook gewoon thuis gevierd met vrienden. In de avond zijn mijn kamergenoot, Mahan, en zijn vrienden hier gearriveerd. We hebben een gezellige tijd gehad en hebben dan ook weer bij kunnen praten. Rond 2:00 zijn zij weer naar huis gegaan. Het is zeer fijn om de mogelijkheid te hebben oudjaarsavond in stilte te vieren, zonder al het lawaai wat wij in Nederland hebben. Ik ben dan ook niet vroeg wakker geworden door al het geknal. Geweldig!

Gelukkig 2010 gewenst!

I have a little less than a week left in Canada. If the weather clears up (we have had crappy weather for a week now), I might head to Niagara Falls to photograph the Falls in winter. If not, then I'll spend my remaining Canadian days in Hamilton. I still have to prepare my presentation and write some reports as well. The time here in Canada has passed quickly and it's almost time to head back. I wish I could extend my stay even longer, but graduating is the next priority. I will definitely be revisiting Canada someday, if not to emigrate!

Ik heb nu nog iets minder dan een week over in Canada. Als het weer wat beter wordt (de afgelopen week was zeer slecht) ga ik mogelijk nog naar Niagara Falls om the Falls in de winter te fotograferen. Zo niet, dan spendeer ik mijn laatste Canadese dagen hier in Hamilton. Ik moet mijn presentatie nog voorbereiden en ook nog een tweetal verslagen schrijven. De tijd hier in Canada is voorbij gevlogen en het is alweer bijna tijd om terug te gaan. Ik zou graag langer willen blijven, maar afstuderen is nu belangrijker. Ik ga zeker nog een keer terug naar Canada, al dan niet als emigratie!

Canada 2009 - Internship & Winter

It's been a while since my last blog post, but there wasn't much to tell. I've been working nonstop in the past 2 weeks to wrap up my experimental work and start writing my report. My report is now finished and the first draft is being reviewed. I managed to write 54 pages in size 10 pts. I hope the first draft is received well, because if not, I'll have to do a lot more editing in the next couple of days. Right now I'm not working and have taken a day off. Tomorrow I will start clearing out my office and on Wednesday I have my last meeting with my supervisor and I will then also say goodbye to most of the people that have helped me during my 5 months here at McMaster. It's been great and I have learned so much. This is an experience I will not easily forget!

Het is weer een tijd geleden sinds ik wat op mijn blog heb geschreven, aangezien er niet veel te vertellen viel. Ik heb de afgelopen 2 weken hard moeten werken om mijn laatste beetjes experimenteel werk af te ronden en om aan mijn verslag te beginnen. Ik heb mijn verslag ondertussen klaar en de eerste versie wordt op dit moment gecorrigeerd. Ik heb maar liefst 54 pagina's op 10pts geschreven en ik hoop dan ook dat de eerste versie meteen de laatste is. Zo niet, dan moet ik de komende paar dagen nog hard werken om het goed te krijgen. Vandaag heb ik vrij genomen en morgen begin ik met het opruimen van mijn werkplek. Woensdag is mijn laatste dag en dan heb ik ook de laatste bijeenkomst met mijn begeleider. Verder zal ik dan ook tegen de andere mensen, die mij met mijn stage hebben geholpen, gedag zeggen. Het is hier een geweldige ervaring geweest en ik zal dit ook niet snel vergeten!

Winter here hasn't really started yet. We have had a couple of days of snow sofar, but nothing too serious. This year, Hamilton has strange weather. Winter hasn't properly started yet and summer wasn't anything special either. I hope to still receive some snow before I fly back to Holland. It's kind off ironic that I came to Canada for the winter experience and now Holland has 20+ cm of snow. Oh well, weather's unpredictable. Below a couple of shots of how the Dundas valley looks now and how it's not frozen solid and how there is no snow.

Winter is hier ondertussen nog steeds niet echt begonnen. We hebben een aantal dagen sneeuw gehad, maar niet veel. Dit jaar heeft Hamilton nogal raar weer blijkbaar. De winter is nog niet echt begonnen en de zomer was ook al niets speciaals. Ik hoop dan ook nog wat sneeuw te zien voordat ik terug moet naar Nederland. Het is wat dat betreft wel ironisch dat ik juist naar Canada ben gegaan voor de winter en vervolgens heeft Nederland wel al zo'n 20+ cm sneeuw gehad. Ach, winter is onvoorspelbaar. Hieronder een aantal foto's van de Dundas valley om te laten zien hoe het er daar nu uit ziet. Het is dus niet dichtgevroren en er ligt ook niet veel sneeuw.

Canada 2009 - New material & Sam Lawrence Park at Night

Yet another week has passed and several interesting things have happened. In the past week, I did several experiments on my "problematic" material and found out that the material is simply not what we though it was. We were expecting to have a material known as Fe-24Mn, however we found that the company sent us the wrong material and it is instead the so-called Fe-17Mn-0.5C. Which means that I have done experiments assuming things about my samples and now have to revise these assumptions and thus the experimental data. This, however, is interesting to do even though time is running out. I have 3 more days of experimental work planned, after which I will start to full-time work on my report.

Alweer een week voorbij en er zijn dit keer een aantal interessante zaken te melden. In de afgelopen week heb ik een aantal metingen gedaan met mijn "problematische" materiaal en nu blijkt dat het materiaal niet is wat wij dachten dat het was. Wij hadden verwacht het materiaal bekend als "Fe-24Mn" te hebben, maar nu blijkt dat het "Fe-17Mn-0.5C" is. Dit houdt in dat mijn metingen, die ik al gedaan had, met de verkeerde aannames zijn gedaan. Deze moet ik dus herzien. Dit is in principe zeer interessante, ware het niet dat de tijd toch wat schaars begint te worden. Ik heb nog 3 dagen van experimenteel werk over, waarna ik full-time aan mijn verslag ga werken.

Last Tuesday, December 1st, Adrian, Tina and I went up to Sam Lawrence Park around 8PM. We had quite a clear night and an almost full-moon, so we decided it was time to witness the beauty of the view this park gives. It was quite cold outside, but still more than doable on bike. We biked for about 45 minutes before we arrived. We took several photo's of the view, which can be found below. We had a great time and the view was beautiful. Anyone who comes to Hamilton should at least go up to Sam Lawrence Park once.
That's it for now. I have a little over a month left in Canada and am now starting to plan what to do when my project is done. Nothing too sure yet, so we'll see. I might just relax a bit at home and start working on my project that I have running in Holland.

Afgelopen dinsdag, 1 December, zijn Adrian, Tina en ik rond 20:00 naar Sam Lawrence Park gefietst. Het was vrij helder die avond en we hadden een bijna volle maan. Hierdoor besloten we dus om eindelijk van het mooie uitzicht te gaan genieten. Het was vrij koud buiten, maar goed te doen op de fiets. We hebben ongeveer 45 minuten gefietst voordat we aankwamen. We hebben een aantal mooie foto's gemaakt van het prachtige uitzicht en deze staan hieronder. Het was zeer gezellig en het uitzicht was geweldig. Iedereen die naar Hamilton gaat moet tenminste een keer naar Sam Lawrence Park gaan.
Dat is het wel zo'n beetje voor nu. Ik heb nog iets meer dan een maand in Canada te gaan en begin langzaamaan plannen te maken voor de tijd na mijn stage. Niets staat nog vast, maar het kan goed zijn dat ik wat rust neem hier en verder wat aan mijn project, dat nog loopt in Nederland, ga werken.

Canada 2009 - Final planning & Candy

It has been a while since I last posted something here. This because not much has happened. I've been working a lot and trying to get the final results in before I have to start writing my report. Tuesday, I had a meeting with my supervisor where we discussed my final planning for the weeks to come. We decided that I should stop doing experimental work and start focussing full-time on writing my report after December 10th. This gives me a little less than 2 weeks left to finish the experimental work. This is not a lot, certainly not when considering that yesterday I found out that the material I've been using is not what we hoped. This might cause some problems for me, but we'll have to see.
Now some positive news: Yesterday, a package of my parents arrived. It was a big box and had a poem attached to it (written by my Mom). Inside was a lot of candy for the feast we call "Sinterklaas" on December 5th. I wasn't expecting anything, so it was a great surprise. Now me and my roommates are going to feast on the candy!

Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik wat van mij heb laten horen. Er is namelijk niet veel nieuws gebeurd. Ik ben veel aan het werk geweest en probeer de laatste resultaten binnen te krijgen alvorens ik aan mijn verslag ga werken. Afgelopen dinsdag heb ik een bijeenkomst bij mijn supervisor gehad. Hier hebben we afgesproken dat ik tot 10 december nog experimenteel werk ga verrichten en hierna 2 weken full-time aan mijn verslag ga werken. 2 weken is niet veel, zeker niet aangezien ik gisteren een aantal zaken heb ontdekt over het materiaal wat ik onderzocht. Dit kan voor problemen gaan zorgen, maar niets is nog zeker.
Dan nu wat leuk nieuws: gisteren is er een pakket voor mij aangekomen. Mijn ouders hebben een grote doos vol met Sinterklaas snoepgoed opgestuurd, samen met een gedicht van mijn moedern. Ik had dit zeker niet verwacht, dus het was dan ook een leuke verrassing. Mijn kamergenoten en ikzelf (natuurlijk) gaan lekker van al dit ongezonde snoepgoed genieten!

Canada 2009 - Workshop presentation

As mentioned in my previous blogpost, I don't have that many new things to say. I am still working hard to finishing my project in time. However, the past week I mainly focussed on the presentation that was planned today. Professor Embury planned a workshop on new routes in High Strength and High Ductility steels, where my supervisor, Dr. Zurob, asked me to present my work. So the past week I prepared the presentation and today I told my story. About 10 - 15 people were present during the workshop, so the crowd wasn't too big. However, they seemed rather impressed by the work I managed to do in, a little over, 3 months time. I got some good feedback and questions. All in all the workshop was very interesting and I learned some interesting new things about materials in general and specific details about my materials, High Manganese Steels. What now remains is finishing up my experimental work for which I have about 3 more weeks. After this it's time to start writing my report and preparing my final presentation. December 24th will be my last day of my internship. Time has flown by quickly. As they say: Tempus Fugit.

Zoals ik in mijn vorige blogpost al aangaf, heb ik niet veel nieuws te vertellen de laatste tijd. De afgelopen week stond in het teken van het voorbereiden van mijn presentatie van vandaag. Professor Embury had namelijk een workshop over "New routes in High Strength and High Ductility steels" gepland en mijn begeleider had mij gevraagd om hier mijn resultaten te presenteren. De afgelopen week heb ik deze presentatie dus voorbereid en vandaag de presentatie gehouden. Er waren ongeveer 10 - 15 mensen aanwezig bij de presentatie, wat niet al te veel is. Ze leken echter allemaal onder de indruk van wat ik klaar heb gekregen in iets meer dan 3 maanden en ik heb daarom ook goede feedback en vragen ontvangen. Al met al was de workshop erg interessant en ik heb wat nieuwe interessante dingen over materialen in het algemeen en mijn materialen, High Manganese Steels, geleerd. Wat nu nog overblijft is het afmaken van mijn experimenteel werk, waar ik nog zo'n 3 weken voor heb. Hierna wordt het tijd om mijn verslag en presentatie te gaan maken. 24 December zal mijn laatste dag van mijn stage zijn. De tijd is zeer snel voorbij gevlogen en het spreekwoord "Tempus Fugit" is dan ook zeer toepasselijk.

Canada 2009 - Another week

Another week has ended and to be honest, I don't have that much news to tell. My project is still on track and I'm preparing for a presentation due November 17th. After this, I will continue to do some more experimental work and then start to think about finishing the project. I will finish it with a presentation and writing a report. This will be in December, however.
Yesterday, I went to one of Mahan's friends' house, where we had a so-called Potluck. This is a party where people bring over food. It was great and I had a good time. Around 4AM, I headed for bed and we woke up around 9.30AM. This because Mahan's friends had to go back to Washington D.C., which is a long drive. They dropped us off at our place and then drove towards the border.
After this I headed for the Dundas Valley, since I wanted to record how it looks now... in autumn. Below are three HDR shots that I took.
That's about it, as I said... not much to say. I'm still having a great time, but it's mostly work nowadays.

Wederom is er een week afgelopen en om eerlijk te zijn... ik heb niet echt veel nieuws. Mijn project gaat nog steeds goed en ik ben nu aan het voorbereiden voor een presentatie op 17 november. Hierna zal ik nog wat experimenteel werk doen en dan langzaamaan gaan denken aan de afronding van mijn project. Dit zal ik doen d.m.v. het geven van een presentatie en het schrijven van een verslag. Dit zal echter pas in december zijn.
Gisteren ben ik naar het huis van een van Mahan's vrienden gegaan. Zij gaven een zogenaamde Potluck. Dit houdt in dat iedereen eten meebrengt en dan is het gezellig babbelen. Het was erg leuk en gezellig. Rond 4AM ging ik naar bed en was om 9:30 weer wakker. Dit omdat de vrienden van Mahan weer terug moesten naar Washington D.C., wat nogal een end rijden is. Ze hebben ons thuis afgezet en zijn toen richting de grens gegaan.
Hierna ben ik nog even naar de Dundas Valley geweest, aangezien ik wilde vastleggen hoe deze er nu uitziet... in de herfst. Hieronder 3 HDR foto's die ik heb gemaakt.
Dat is het wel zo'n beetje... zoals ik al zei heb ik niet veel nieuws. Alles gaat nog steeds geweldig hier, maar het is veelal werken.

Canada 2009 - Project progress + Broken gears

Last week has been a good week for my internship. I have booked some seriously interesting results and have a good idea for what I'll do in the last 2 months of my internship. I also had a meeting with my supervisor, where we discussed my progress and sofar he's very satisfied with the results I obtained sofar. Good news!
Furthermore, my freespace project, which I am doing at the TU/e in Holland, has also finally booked some good results and is now back on track. Due to many unexpected and unforeseen experimental difficulties this project took a lot longer than expected. It's back on track now and I should be able to finish it in time.
Also some bad news: My bike broke down. Apparently the ball-bearing that connects the rear axle to the rear gears has broken off. My bike is now at Canadian Tire for repairs and should be repaired within a couple of weeks. Just enough time for me to utilize it in the snow (I hope).
Nothing else to tell, really. I've been spending a lot of time on my project and thus not much interesting to tell happened. Next week I will visit Mississauga again, to visit some of Mahan's older friends. Should be fun.

Afgelopen week was een goede week voor mijn stage. Ik heb een aantal zeer interessante resultaten behaald en heb ook een goed idee van wat ik in de komende weken wil gaan doen. Ik heb verder een bespreking met mijn begeleider gehad en tot nu toe is hij zeer tevreden over mijn resultaten. Goed nieuws, dus!
Verder heb ik ook eindelijk goede resultaten kunnen behalen voor mijn Freespace project. Dit project is door een aantal onverwachte en oncontroleerbare experimentele problemen compleet uitgelopen, maar nu komt er eindelijk wat fatsoenlijks binnen. Ook dit project zal ik op tijd kunnen afronden.
Dan nog wat slecht nieuws: Mijn fiets hier is kapot gegaan. Door onverklaarbare redenen is de lager, die de achteras met de achtertandwielen verbind, afgebroken. Mijn fiets is daarom nu bij Canadian Tire voor reparatie en zou binnen enkele weken klaar moeten zijn. Misschien heb ik dan dus nog genoeg tijd om mijn fiets in de sneeuw (hopelijk) te kunnen gebruiken.
Verder is er niet veel nieuws te vertellen. Ik ben druk bezig met mijn stage, waardoor ik niet veel spannends te vertellen heb. Volgende week ga ik weer een keer naar Mississauga, om met goede vrienden van Mahan op te trekken. Dat wordt weer leuk!

Canada 2009 - Workload & Autumn colors

As the title might suggest, work has become busy. I've spent almost every day of the week working from 8.00AM until 5.00 or 5.30PM. Now, that might not sound too bad, but consider that I only have about 30 minutes of break between experimental methods. I should have 1 hour, but the time just aint there. Too much things to do and too little time to plan it all in. I, however, don't mind working a lot. I finally have stuff to do and can get my experiments going. The first results are in and it doesn't look too promising yet. The etching process that I use is not giving me the details that I am looking for, so I will have to look for a different method. However, my new tensile samples finally came in and they look good. Tomorrow, Monday, I will test some of these samples at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions with liquid Nitrogen. Should be good!

Zoals de titel a aangeeft is mijn stage drukker geworden. Ik ben de afgelopen week zowat elke dag vanaf 8:00 tot 17:00 of 17:30 op de universiteit geweest. Dit klinkt niet al te overdreven, maar het wordt al snel vervelend als je maar tijd hebt voor een half uur pauze tussen de experimentele handelingen in. Ik zou officieel hiervoor 1 uur krijgen, maar het zit er nu gewoonweg niet in. Te veel dingen die gedaan moeten worden en niet genoeg tijd om het allemaal in te plannen. Ik vind het allemaal niet zo heel erg, want ik heb nu eindelijk altijd iets te doen en kan mijn experimenten goed opzetten. The eerste resultaten zijn dan ook binnen en het ziet er allemaal niet geheel veelbelovend uit. Het etsproces, dat ik toepas, geeft mij niet het detail wat ik had gehoopt dus ik moet op zoek naar een andere techniek. Ik heb echter ook nieuwe treksamples binnen gekregen en ze zagen er goed uit. Morgen, maandag, ga ik deze dan ook testen op kamertemperatuur en een paar samples op cryogene temperaturen... namelijk in een bad van vloeibare stikstof. Wordt leuk!

However, also not work-related things have happened. I went to visit the Churchill Park and the Community Gardens today. Here is a trail system that takes you to a small peninsula in the bay of Hamilton. The autumn colors were simply stunning once more and I had a lot of fun together with Mahan, Dorina and Tina, who came along for the trip. The beauty of Canada was shown to me once more and I can't say I am disappointed yet. Photo's are shown below.

Ik heb niet alleen maar werk-gerelateerde dingen gedaan. Ik ben vandaag naar het Churchill Park en de Community Gardens gegaan. Hiere bevinden zich een aantal trails, waaronder een die je naar een klein schiereiland in de baai van Hamilton brengt. De herfstkleuren waren, zoals altijd, prachtig en ik heb dan ook veel plezier gehad met Mahan, Dorina en Tina. Zij waren namelijk mee gegaan. De pracht en praal van Canada was nogmaals duidelijk gemaakt en ik ben nog steeds niet teleurgesteld. Foto's staan hieronder.

Beautiful! This week is going to busy as well and I think that the next month will be quite busy as well. I'm pushing to get some good results now and I want to be able to get some good data to be able to present my findings.

Prachtig! Deze week wordt weer druk en ik vermoed dat de komende maand ook zeer druk wordt. Ik probeer nu goede resultaten te krijgen, zodat ik wat te rapporteren heb.

Canada 2009 - Mississauga & Collingwood

Kleine update: Ik heb zojuist anonieme blogposts aangezet. Blijkbaar stond dit nog niet aan. Iedereen kan nu berichten achterlaten.

This weekend, my roommate, Mahan, invited me to stay at his parent's place in Mississauga. This so I could get a shot at seeing Mississauga and its surrounding nature. We left Hamilton in the evening of Friday and headed straight for Mississauga. After a top quality dinner of Lasagna at Mahan's parents, we headed for the Starbucks. Here we met up with Matt, one of Mahan's best friends and we then went to visit Port Credit by Lake Ontario. It was dark by then, so we had a great view over Lake Ontario and we could even see Hamilton. Too bad my photo's turned out badly, so I have no shots of the surroundings here. We headed back around 11PM and headed for bed.

Dit weekend had mijn kamergenoot, Mahan, mij uitgenodigd voor een verblijf bij zijn ouders thuis. Zijn ouders wonen in Mississauga, waardoor ik de kans kreeg om Mississauga te verkennen. We vertrokken vrijdag avond en hebben 's avonds een heerlijke maaltijd van Lasagna gehad bij Mahan's ouders. Hierna zijn we naar Starbucks gegaan, waar we Matt, Mahan's beste vriend, opzochten. Toen stond Port Credit aan Lake Ontario op de planning. Het was tegen deze tijd al donker, dus we kregen een mooi uitzicht over Lake Ontario en we konden zelfs Hamilton zien liggen. Helaas zijn mijn foto's tegen gevallen, dus ik heb geen foto's van de omgeving. Rond 23:00 gingen we terug naar bed.

In the morning of Saturday, Mahan showed me Cooksville Creek, which is a nice park near his parent's house. I got some good shots of the colors of autumn here and these are shown below. It was a chilly day, but the weather was great. After seeing this park, we headed for Erindale Park and the Credit River. This also is a park in Mississauga, but it's a little bigger. Again, we got a great view of the surroundings and the colors of Autumn. Again, shots are shown below. The last park we visited in the morning was Clarkson by Lake Ontario. This gave a nice view over Lake Ontario and even showed Toronto's skyline. After this we headed back for lunch.

Zaterdag ochtend heeft Mahan mij verschillende locaties in Mississauga laten zien. Allereerst gingen we naar Cooksville Creek wat zo ongeveer in Mahan's achtertuin ligt. Hier heb ik zeer mooie foto's van de herfstkleuren kunnen maken. Deze staan dan ook hieronder. Het was een vrij koude dag, maar het weer was verder prachtig. Hierna zijn we naar Erindale Park en de Credit River gegaan. Dit is een wat groter park in Mississauga en ook hier hebben we een mooi overzicht van herfstkleuren gezien. Foto's staan hieronder. Het laatste park wat we hebben bekeken was Clarkson aan Lake Ontario. Dit gaf een mooi uitzicht op Lake Ontario en we konden ook duidelijk de Skyline van Toronto zien. Hierna zijn we terug gegaan voor lunch.

Trip to Collingwood - Route naar Collingwood

After lunch we met up with Matt for a roadtrip towards Collingwood. Matt told us that there we would get a great view. By the time we left Mississauga it started to get darker already. Thus, we stopped at a place near Calidon to take some shots of the colors of autumn before it would be too dark. These shots are shown below. After taking some shots we headed for Collingwood. By the time we arrived it was already dark. We headed up the Blue Mountain, which is a mountain near Collingwood. Here we got a great view of Collingwood and Georgian Bay. We found some great spots with a great view and I took some nice shots of the view. These shots are shown below.

Na de lunch zijn we samen met Matt op een roadtrip met bestemming "Collingwood" gegaan. Matt wist te vertellen dat hier een geweldig uitzicht was. Tegen de tijd dat we Mississauga verlieten begon het al donker te worden, dus zijn we bij Calidon gestopt om wat foto's van de herfstkleuren te maken voordat het hiervoor te donker was. Hieronder staan deze foto's. Hierna zijn we richting Collingwood gegaan. Tegen de tijd dat we hier aankwamen was het al donker en we besloten de Blue Mountain op te gaan. Hier is een geweldig uitzicht op Collingwood en Georgian Bay en we hebben dan ook een paar mooie plekken gevonden. De foto's hiervan staan hieronder.

After enjoying this amazing view for a while, we decided it was time to head back. We got back to Mississauga around 11:00PM and decided we could still go to a place Matt knew as a place to get a great view on Toronto by night. We headed there and here I took a nice shot of the Toronto skyline. After this we called it a day and headed for bed.

Na een tijd van dit geweldige uitzicht te hebben genoten, besloten we dat het tijd werd om terug te gaan. We waren terug in Mississauga rond 23:00 en besloten nog even naar een plaats te gaan, welke Matt kende als een plek waar je een geweldig uitzicht op Toronto by night hebt. We zijn hier heengegaan en hier heb ik een mooie foto van de Toronto skyline in de nacht genomen. Hierna besloten we naar bed te gaan.

All in all it was a great weekend and I thank Mahan's parents for their hospitality. It was a great way to see Mississauga and I had a lot of fun with Mahan and Matt.

Al met al een geweldig weekend en ik heb Mahan's ouders dan ook uitgebreid bedankt voor hun gastvriendelijkheid. Het was een geweldige manier om Mississauga te leren kennen en ik heb veel plezier gehad met Mahan en Matt.

Not much new has happened in the passed weeks, so I haven't posted much since my family left. Life has returned to normal and I'm working on my project once more. I am finally making some decent progress and getting some long awaited results. The process of experimental mechanics is a slow one, since many operations take at least an hour or more to complete and even longer to wait for a free spot. I am getting used to this and now I finally get things done.

Last weekend was supposed to be a Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada. The original plan I had was visiting Mississauga with my roommate, Mahan. However, Mahan had to work on Saturday, so we delayed the trip until next weekend.
Furthermore, I had my first flat Canadian tire this weekend and spent some time trying to fix it. I'm still reaping the rewards of the fix, as I must've bent my back in a wrong way while sitting down. I've had serious back pains for 3 days now and hope that it's settling down soon.

The weather has finally cooled down here and it's now about 7 degrees during daytime and around 0 degrees during the nights. No more heat for me and this is the way I like it. Can't wait for the winter here in beautiful Canada.
Oh and ss the title suggests, I have also reached the point where I have spent more time in Canada than that there is left. This saddens me a bit, since it's is beautiful here and I love Canada so far.

Er is de afgelopen weken niet veel gebeurd, waardoor ik niet veel heb gepost na het vertrek van mijn familie. Het leven gaat weer verder zoals gewoonlijk en ik werk weer gewoon aan mijn project. Ik heb de afgelopen dagen eindelijk wat fatsoenlijke resultaten kunnen behalen en daardoor dus wat voortgang geboekt. Experimentele mechanica is een traag onderzoeksgebied, omdat veel behandelingen al snel meer dan een uur kosten en je vaak nog langer moet wachten voor je de behandeling kunt doen. Ik raak hier nu aan gewend en kan nu eindelijk mijn draai vinden.
Vorig weekend was Thanksgiving weekend. Mijn huisgenoot en ik hadden gepland om naar Mississauga te gaan. Echter, Mahan moest werken op zaterdag waardoor dit dus niet doorging. We hebben deze trip nu uitgesteld tot het volgende weekend.
Ik heb ook mijn allereerste lekke Canadese band gehad afgelopen weekend en heb dan ook wat tijd moeten besteden om deze gerepareerd te krijgen. Ik moet mijn rug tijdens deze reparatie op een verkeerde manier hebben gedraaid, want ik heb al 3 dagen veel pijn in mijn onderrug. Ik hoop dan ook dat dit snel over gaat, want dit is geen pretje.
Het weer is verder ook eindelijk wat afgekoeld. Het is hier nu overdag zo'n graad of 7 en 's nachts is het rond het vriespunt. Eindelijk geen hitte meer... precies zoals ik het fijn vind. Ik kan amper wachten tot de winter echt begint.
Oh en wat de titel betreft: ik heb eindelijk het punt bereikt dat ik langer in Canada ben dan dat ik er nog zal zijn. Dit vind ik toch zeker wel jammer, want het is hier kortom geweldig.

Saturday, the 26th of September, my parents and sister arrived from their tour throughout Ontario here at my home in Hamilton. The first thing we had planned was, after showing them around my house, head for Cirque du Soleil in Toronto. The show was simply amazing and I had a great time. It was awesome to finally speak Dutch again and to meet up with my family.
Sunday, the 27th of September, we planned to go to Niagara Falls. Originally we had this planned for my birthday, September 28th, but the predicted weather was stormy and with a lot of rain. Therefore, we decided to go to Niagara Falls when the weather was still doable. We had great fun at the Falls and I took some shots of us at the Falls and tried a technique called High Dynamic Range. All in all the day was amazing and we stuck around until Niagara at Night, where they switch on the illumination. Below some shots of the day.

Zaterdag, 26 September, arriveerden mijn ouders en zus bij mijn huis. Zij hebben de afgelopen tijd door Ontario gereisd en zijn nu een aantal dagen hier. Het eerste wat we gepland hadden was Cirque du Soleil in Toronto. De show was geweldig en het was zeer gezellig. Het was geweldig om weer een keer Nederlands te kunnen spreken en om mijn familie weer te zien.
Zondag, 27 September, hadden we gepland naar Niagara Falls te gaan. Oorspronkelijk zouden we dit op mijn verjaardag, de 28ste, hebben gedaan. Echter de weersvoorspelling was stormachtig en regenachtig op deze dag, dus we besloten te gaan terwijl het weer nog goed was. We hebben veel plezier gehad bij de Falls en ik heb wat foto's van ons gemaakt. Verder heb ik nog een techniek genaamd High Dynamic Range geprobeerd. Al met al was het een geslaagde dag en we zijn gebleven tot Niagara by Night waarbij de verlichting aangaat. Hieronder wat foto's van de dag.

Monday, the 28th of September, was my 22nd birthday. Like posted above, this was originally supposed to be a trip to Niagara Falls. However, due to the weather, we decide to head for Toronto's Museum of Science. However, before we arrived we'd first go to a shopping mall and buy some clothes (parents/sister) and I would get a new coat for the oncoming Canadian winter. My winter coat needed a renewal for a while now and Canada's the best place to get a good, warm winter coat. We headed for a shopping mall near Toronto, but this wasn't what we had hoped for. Thus, we headed for Mississauga. Here we found a massive shopping district, where my sister could go nuts. We headed to some stores, bought a lot of stuff and when we noticed that there was no way I was going to found a good coat here, we wanted to head for the nearest Sears. However, by this time it was already way past 2:30PM and thus the trip to the museum would become difficult. We therefore decided to skip the museum trip altogether and go on a shopping spree. We headed for the Oakville Place Mall. Here, we found a Sears and a The Bay. I found a very good winter coat from Columbia at Sears and my parents and sister bought some more stuff in the stores. Once we were done here it was past 5:00PM and we headed back for Hamilton. In the evening we looked at my holiday photos and my parents and sister headed back for their B&B early, as they needed some well deserved night rest. All in all a good way, but not ideal (weather/shopping) way to spent a birthday.

Maandag, 28 September, was mijn 22ste verjaardag. Zoals hierboven al aangegeven, was de originele planning om naar de Niagara Falls te gaan. Echter, door het weer besloten we om naar Toronto's Museum of Science te gaan. Voordat we hier heengingen zijn we echter eerst naar een winkelcentrum gegaan. Hier wilden mijn ouders en zus wat kleren aanschaffen en ik zou voor een nieuwe winterjas gaan kijken. Mijn winterjas is al een tijd toe aan een vernieuwing en Canada is natuurlijk ideaal voor een goede, warme winterjas. We zijn richting een winkelcentrum nabij Toronto gegaan en kwamen er al snel achter dat we hier niet zouden slagen. We zijn toen naar een winkelpark in Mississauga gegaan. Mijn zus zou hier zo kunnen gaan wonen, want ze kan onmogelijk in een dag alle winkels bezoeken. We zijn naar een aantal winkels gegaan en hier hebben mijn ouders en zus een aantal kleren gekocht. Echter, ik kon hier geen goede winterjas vinden dus we zochten naar een oplossing. Tegen deze tijd was het al later dan 14:30 en we hebben het museumbezoek dus opgegeven. We zijn toen naar het Oakville Place Mall gegaan, waar een Sears en The Bay te vinden zijn. Ik heb een zeer goede winterjas van Columbia kunnen vinden bij de Sears en mijn ouders en zus hebben nog wat kleren gekocht in dit winkelcentrum. Tegen de tijd dat we hier klaar waren was het al later dan 17:00 en zijn we terug richting Hamilton gegaan. In de avond hebben we mijn vakantiefoto's bekeken en daarna zijn mijn ouders en zus naar hun B&B gegaan voor een welverdiende nachtrust. Al met al geen slechte, maar zeker geen ideale (weer/winkelen) manier van een verjaardag spenderen.

Tuesday, the 29th of September, we had a tour of Hamilton planned. In the morning we visited my backyard, the Dundas Valley. After this we headed for the the Harbour Waterfront Trail. My parents and sister enjoyed the views and beauty of this trail. After this we headed for Sam Lawrence Park. This is where the amazing view over Hamilton and the bay of Lake Ontario is and we all enjoyed it a lot. After enjoying the view for a while we headed for the McMaster University, where we had a tour of the facilities planned. My supervisor showed us around and we found it very interesting. In the evening my roommate, Mahan, had a small party planned in honor of my 22nd birthday. It was great fun.

Dinsdag, 29 September, hadden we een rondrit door Hamilton gepland. 's Ochtends hebben we eerst mijn achtertuin, de Dundas Valley, bekeken. Hierna zijn we naar de Harbour Waterfront Trail gegaan. Mijn ouders en zus genoten zichtbaar van het uitzicht en de mooie omgeving. Daarna zijn we naar Sam Lawrence Park gegaan. Dit is de plaats waar een prachtig uitzicht op Hamilton en de baai van Lake Ontario is. We hebben een tijd van het uitzicht genoten en zijn toen naar de McMaster University gegaan. Hier hadden we een rondleiding gepland. Mijn begeleider gaf een korte rondleiding en het was zeer interessant. In de avond had mijn kamergenoot, Mahan, een klein feestje voor mijn verjaardag gepland. Het was geweldig.

Wednesday, the 30th of September, we went to Toronto Downtown. There we would go up in the CN Tower and have a tour around Toronto itself. The weather was a lot better, but there was a strong wind and it was cold. The CN Tower was great as always and afterwards we headed for the harbour to do a short boat tour around Toronto Harbour. This tour gives a great view of Toronto's famous skyline and it was a fun short trip. It was chilly, though, so that brought down our spirits. After the boat tour we went on a bus tour through Toronto Downtown. This is an open bus ride and this meant it was extremely cold and thus not really enjoyable. Halfway down the tour we also hopped off for a little visit to Toronto's Eaton Centre Mall and afterwards we finished the bus tour. After this we were all so cold that we headed for the first food court we could find and warmed up with a fast food meal. When we had devoured our meal, we headed back home. We stopped on the way there at Oakville Place Mall, where I bought a new watch. All in all it was a great day.

Woensdag, 30 September, zijn we naar Toronto Downtown gegaan. Hier zijn we op de CN Tower gegaan en hebben een tour door Toronto zelf gedaan. Het weer was een stuk beter, maar er was een sterkre, koude wind. De CN Tower was geweldig zoals altijd en hierna zijn we naar de haven gegaan om een korte boottocht in de haven van Toronto te doen. Deze tocht geeft een geweldig uitzicht op de skyline van toronto en het was een leuke, korte tocht. Het was echter wel koud dus dat hielp niet mee. Na de boottocht zijn we op een bustour door Toronto Downtown gegaan. Dit is op een open bus, wat dus inhoud dat het weer lekker koud was. Hierdoor was het moeilijk om van de tour te genieten. We zijn halverwege de tour even uitgestapd om te shoppen in Toronto's Eaton Centre Mall en daarna hebben we de tour afgemaakt. Eenmaal terug waren we zo onderkoeld dat we naar het eerste de beste food court zijn gegaan om een warme fastfood maaltijd te verorberen. Eenmaal klaar met eten zijn we op weg naar huis gegaan. Onderweg zijn we nog even naar het Oakville Place Mall gegaan, waar ik een horloge heb gekocht. Al met al een zeer geslaagde, koude dag.

Canada 2009 - Sam Lawrence Park

The past week has been quite busy. I have been able to do more than in the previous weeks, due to the added topics for my project. I have also had the first opportunity to meet with my official project supervisor, Prof. dr. Embury. He's a really nice guy and he definitely knows a lot. He's been kind enough to offer a lot of help with my project. He's a charismatic man and I was definitely impressed by his knowledge. I can't really say anything new and fresh about my project. I've been doing a lot of experimental work and analysis, but I won't go into details here. This will only bore the reader.
However, today I finally went up to Sam Lawrence Park. This park is located up a mountain/hill in Hamilton Downtown. It gives a great view over Hamilton, the Bay of Hamilton, Lake Ontario and at a good day you can see Toronto. I will let the photos do the talking for me once more.

De afgelopen week was vrij druk. Ik heb eindelijk meer kunnen doen dan in de afgelopen week, mede doordag ik meer onderwerpen aan mijn project heb toegevoegd. Ik heb verder de eerste bijeenkomst gehad waar mij officiele begeleider, Prof. dr. Embury, bij aanwezig was. Het is een zeer aardige man en hij weet zeker zeer veel. Hij heeft veel hulp geboden met mijn project. Het is een charismatische man en ik was zeker onder de indruk van zijn kennis. Ik kan verder niet veel nieuws over mijn project vertellen. Ik heb veel experimenteel werk en analyses gedaan, maar ik ga hierover niet gedetailleerd vertellen. Dit is voor de lezer niet bepaald boeiend.
Echter, vandaag ben ik eindelij naar Sam Lawrence Park gegaan. Dit park bevindt zich op een berg/heuvel in Hamilton Downtown en geeft een geweldig uitzicht op Hamilton, de baai van Hamilton, Lake Ontario en op een goede dag kan je Toronto zelfs zien. Ik geef nu de foto's her woord.

En nog wat ander goed nieuws: Mijn ouders en zus zijn veilig aangekomen in Canada en zijn nu op door Ontario aan het rijden. Tot zover bevalt het goed en ze zouden als alles mee zit de 26ste in de middag bij mij moeten arriveren. Hun avonturen zijn te vinden op de blog van mijn zus.

Canada 2009 - African Lion Safari

Yesterday, me and Tom van der Sande (a fellow student of the TU/e, he studies Automotive Engineering) decided to cycle to the African Lion Safari. Tom is located in Waterloo (ON), while I am in Hamilton. The African Lion Safari is somewhere in the middle between these two cities. He had to cycle for 39km and I had to cover 25km. Normally this is not too hard to cycle, but the Canadian roads are not equipped for cyclist and therefor the trip there was rough for me. Tom, being the more advanced cyclist of us two, didn't have much trouble covering the 39km. We met up at the African Lion Safari and went in. I was a bit tired, but still good to go.

The first thing we did was head towards the Birds of Prey area. This had the priority for me, as I'm a fan of these birds. We watched the birds for a while, walked around and had a lot of fun. We also visited the other birds and the Elephant den. Below some shots of the photos I took here.

Gisteren besloten ik en Tom, een mede student aan de TU/e (hij studeert daar Automotive Technology), om naar de African Lion Safari te fietsen. Tom zit op dit moment in Waterloo (ON) en ik in Hamilton. De African Lion Safari ligt ongeveer in het midden tussen deze twee steden. Tom heeft 39km moeten afleggen, terwijl het voor mij 25km was. In Nederland zou 25km goed te doen zijn, maar de Canadese wegen zijn niet bepaald goed uitgerust voor fietsers. Hierom was de fietstocht wat zwaar voor mij. Tom fietst echter wel vaker lange afstanden, dus hij had geen moeite met de 39km. Bij de African Lion Safari kwamen we elkaar tegen en gingen naar binnen. Ik was wel moe, maar kon nog goed door gaan.
Het eerste wat we hebben gedaan is richting de roofvogels gaan. Dit had voor mij prioriteit, aangezien ik een fan van deze vogels ben. We hebben een tijd naar de vogels gekeken, wat rond gelopen en veel plezier gehad. We zijn ook naar de andere vogels gaan kijken en ook even naar de Olifanten hoek geweest. Hieronder wat foto's die ik hier gemaakt heb.

Around 11:00AM we headed towards the Safari Bus Tour. This tour takes you through the Game Reserve. It only cost 5.20$CAD to take the tour. The bus ride was good, but for some reason the Safari people decided that it was best for the windows of the bus to be blackened. This interfered with the quality of my shots, but I'm not disappointed. Below some shots of the photo's I took there.

Rond 11:00 zijn we richting de Safari Bus Tour gegaan. Deze tour gaat door de Game Reserve. Het kostte $5.20CAD. De rit was good, maar om een onverklaarbare reden hebben de Safari mensen besloten dat het goed was om de ramen donker te maken. After this we headed towards the elephants, but this time they were swimming and taking a bath in a lake near a lunch area. We watched the elephants for a while and took some photos. These are shown below.

Hierna zijn we naar de olifanten gegaan, maar dit keer waren ze aan het zwemmen en badderen in een meer dichtbij een lunch gebied. We hebben de olifanten een tijd bekeken en hebben wat foto's gemaakt. Deze staan hieronder.

After this we headed for the Birds of Prey show. The show itself was awesome, even though some birds were only visible for a short while. It's always great to see how skilled birds of prey actually are at catching prey. I took a lot of shots here, which are shown below

Hierna zijn we richting de roofvogelshow gegaan. De show zelf was geweldig, al waren sommige vogels wel erg snel weer weg. Het is zeer gaaf om te zien hoe goed roofvogels wel niet zijn in het vangen van prooi. Ik heb veel foto's gemaakt hier, deze staan hieronder.

After the Birds of Prey show, we headed for the Elephant show. This gave me a double feeling. Yes, the things the elephants did was fun, but in my heart I knew that it was unnatural and that made me a little sad too. All in all the show was good, but I couldn't get rid of that double feeling. Na de roofvogelshow zijn we richting de Olifanten show gegaan. Deze show gaf me een dubbel gevoel. Wat de olifanten deden was zeker wel grappig, maar in mijn hart weet ik dat het onnatuurlijk is en dat maakte mij dus ook een beetje verdrietig. De show zelf was goed gedaan, maar het gevoel kon ik niet wegkrijgen. Oordeel zelf na het zien van de foto's hieronder.

After the elephant show we were kind off done with the activities at the African Lion Safari. We did a boat tour, but the photos I took there are not worth showing. After this we did everything that is available at the Safari. I convined Tom to go to the Birds of Prey once more, so I could take some more shots. This time the Bald Eagle was in a better position, so I could get some goods shots of him. Below the last of the shots I took of the Birds of Prey.

Na de Olifanten show hadden we zo ongeveer alles gedaan in de African Lion Safari. We hebben nog een korte boot trip gedaan, maar de foto's die ik daar gemaakt heb zijn niet echt spannend. Hierna hadden we alles wat we in de Safari konden doen wel gedaan. Ik had Tom nog een keer overtuigd om naar de Roofvogels terug te gaan, zodat ik nog wat foto's kon maken. Dit keer zat de zeearend in een betere positie, zodat ik wat mooie foto's van hem kon maken. Hieronder de laatste selectie foto's van de Roofvogels.

Of course we also took some shots of ourselves, which are shown below. All in all it was a great day and I think the trip there was worth it in the end. Seeing Bald Eagles again is just awesome. After we had seen enough at the African Lion Safari, me and Tom cycled towards a McDonalds, which was 11km on the route of Tom. This meant I had to cycle back even further. We had a quick meal, said goodbye and I was on my way back.

Natuurlijk hebben we ook foto's van onszelf gemaakt. Deze staan hieronder. Al met al was het een geweldige dag en de toch erheen was het uiteindelijk meer dan waard. Het zien van zeearenden is gewoonweg geweldig. Nadat we alles hadden gezien in de African Lion Safari zijn Tom en ik richting een McDonalds gefietst. Deze was 11km verder op de route van Tom. Dit hield dat ik dus nog verder terug moest fietsen. We hebben wat gegeten, gedag gezegd en ik was op weg naar Hamilton.

On the way back I had a better pace, since this time I travelled on the asfalt and not the gravel. I made the trip of 33.3km in about 1 hour and 40 minutes, which is kind off great considering I never cycle this far. All in all I covered about 69km in one day. I would not advice this to anyone, considering I'm now facing the consquences. It was definitely worth it, though. Finally being able to speak Dutch again and meeting up with a Dutchie. When I was almost back in Hamilton, I was also treated with an amazing view of Hamilton. This is shown below, along with a shot to prove I did travel far.

Op de terugweg had ik een beter tempo op de fiets. Dit omdat ik nu over het asfalt fietste en niet over het grind, zoals de heenweg. Ik heb de afstand van 33.3km in ongeveer 1 uur en 40 minuten afgelegd, wat niet bepaald slecht is voor iemand die nooit zo ver fietst. In totaal heb ik ongeveer 69km in een dag afgelegd. Ik kan dit niet adviseren, omdat ik nu met de gevolgen zit. Het was het echter zeker waard. Eindelijk weer een keer Nederlands praten en met een Nederlander iets doen. Toen ik bijna terug was in Hamilton werd ik ook nog eens getrakteerd op een prachtig uitzicht op Hamilton. Deze staat hieronder samen met een foto om te bewijzen dat ik echt zo ver heb gefietst.

Canada 2009 - Labour Day & Roommates

This week has been really productive for me. I have been trying to figure out what was causing the problems in the CO2-supply and we have most likely identified the problem. We are now looking for a good solution and it will get fixed next week most likely.
My internship project has been extended to include some more topics. I will look at the recovery and recrystallisation mechanisms in both of my alloys. This means I will have less free time and more time to work on my project. As I said in my previous posts, I don't mind this at all. It's good to learn new things.
The social part of this week has been great as well. Monday was Labour Day, which meant a day of and a day to spend with friends. We went to Bayfront park in the afternoon and just had a blast. We basically rested, played some guitar (not me, Calvin did)... made some photos (me) and played some frisbee games. It was great fun. Below some shots of that day.
On Thursday my new roommate, Adrian, arrived. He's been away for the summer, but already lived in this home for 4 years now. He's a really nice guy and I'm sure we'll get allong just great. He is never home in the weekends, so I only had a short amount of time to actually meet him.
That's about it for now, next week my parents and sister leave for Toronto Pearson International Airport, so they will be on my continent once again. They will arrive at casa di Jeroen at September 26th!

Deze week was zeer productief. Ik ben vooral bezig geweest met het repareren van de CO2 toevoer in het lab. We hebben nu waarschijnlijk de boosdoener gevonden en hopen dit volgende week eindelijk te kunnen fixen.
Mijn stage project is weer wat uitgebreider geworden. Na wat aandringen ga ik nu ook onderzoek doen naar de herstel en rekristallisatie eigenschappen van mijn legeringen. Dit houd dan ook meteen in dat ik minder tijd vrij zal hebben, maar dat ik dus wel meer kan doen voor mijn project. Zoals ik eerder al aangaf vind ik dit niet erg.. Het is goed om nieuwe dingen te leren.
Het sociale deel van de afgelopen week was ook goed. Maandag was Labour Day, wat inhield dat ik een dag vrij had om met vrienden te spenderen. We zijn naar Bayfront Park gegaan en hebben hier veel plezier gehad. We hebben vooral uitgerust, wat gitaar gespeeld (Calvin, niet ik) en ik heb wat foto's gemaakt. Aan het eind van de dag hebben we ook nog wat ge-frisbee'd (Scrabble, anyone?). Het was zeer gezellig. Hieronder wat foto's van de dag zelf.
Donderdag arriveerde mijn derde en laatste huisgenoot, Adrian. Hij is de hele zomer weg geweest, maar woont hier al zo'n 4 jaar. Hij lijkt erg aardig en ik ben er dan ook zeker van dat wij goed met elkaar op kunnen schieten. Hij is in het weekend vaak niet aanwezig en daarom heb ik hem dus ook maar kort kunnen spreken.
Dat is het wel zo'n beetje voor deze week. Volgende week vertrekken mijn ouders en zus richting Toronto Pearson International Airport en zullen zij dus op mijn continent arriveren. 26 September arriveren zij op mijn stekkie!

Canada 2009 - SEM, Lens and Trail

The past week was a bit more interesting to talk about than the previous weeks. Monday started with troubles for my side project. I am supposed to use a CO/CO2-ratio to decarburize (remove carbon) steel samples. However, there seems to be a problem with the CO2-supply. Thus I couldn't do this. I did do my first session of polishing in the afternoon, though. Polishing has to be done to get a sample smooth enough for use in a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). I prepared my two fractured tensile samples in about 2 and a half hour and now they were so smooth that the surface became a mirror.
On Tuesday I had a SEM training planned. In the morning I had a 2 hour session with one of the trainers. Here I looked at my samples and got to know the SEM that I would most likely be using a lot. A SEM is an expensive piece of equipment and one has to be sure that he knows what he's doing before operating one. It was fun and educational to work with the SEM. After the SEM session I analyzed the results I had obtained sofar and in the afternoon I received an e-mail that the cheque for my "living allowance" for August was ready. I picked this up and headed home. Now that I know that I had enough money to live here in Hamilton, I decided to go buy the tele lens I wanted for so long.

De afgelopen week is wat interessanter om over te vertellen dan de voorgaande weken. Maandag startte met problemen voor mijn zij-project. Ik moet namelijk staal gaan decarburizeren (koolstof verwijderen) met een CO/CO2-ratio. Er bleek echter een probleem te zijn met de CO2-aanvoer, waardoor ik dus geen decarburizatie kon doen. Ik heb verder in de middag mijn eerste polijst-sessie gehad. Ik moet mijn samples polijsten alvorens ik ze in de SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) kan bekijken. Polijsten geeft de samples namelijk een zeer kleine oppervlakteruwheid. In twee uur tijd heb ik mijn twee samples kunnen polijsten en nu waren ze zo vlak dat ze eruit zagen als een spiegel.
Dinsdag heb ik voor het eerst met de SEM gewerkt. Ik heb een twee uur durende training gehad waarin ik mijn samples heb bekeken. Deze SEM ga ik waarschijnlijk vaak gebruiken voor mijn project en hierdoor moet ik goed weten waar ik mee bezig ben. Een SEM is duur en daardoor moet je wel weten wat je aan het doen bent. Het is leuk en leerzaam om met een SEM te werken. In de middag heb ik de resultaten bekeken en heb ik een mail ontvangen waarin mij verteld was dat mijn cheque van de "living allowance" voor Augustus klaar was. Na deze opgehaald te hebben ben ik naar huis gegaan. Nu ik zeker wist dat ik genoeg geld had om in Hamilton fatsoenlijk te leven ben ik de tele lens, die ik al een tijd wil kopen, gaan halen.

Canon 70-200mm F/4.0L iS USM

The Canon 70-200mm F/4.0L iS USM is one of the best lenses one can buy for this price. I won't give the price as it will only make me sad. However, paying the small fortune was definitely worth it. I will be using this lens a lot and I prefer having the best of the best. This way I will never regret saving money on a lens when I take a shot of, for example, a Bald Eagle.
I have, of course, tested this lens in the past days and below are some results of what I produced thusfar. I can't say I'm disappointed...

De Canon 70-200mm F/4.0L iS USM is een van de beste lenzen in zijn prijsklasse. Ik ga de prijs niet noemen, want daar word ik alleen maar verdrietig van. Echter, het betalen van een klein fortuin is deze lens zeker waard. Ik ga deze lens vaak gebruiken en dan heb ik liever het beste van het beste. Hierdoor krijg ik zeker geen spijt als ik een foto van, bijvoorbeeld, een Amerikaanse Zeearend neem.
Ik heb deze lens natuurlijk uitgebreid getest in de afgelopen dagen en hieronder staan wat resultaten van wat ik met deze lens kan klaarkrijgen. Ik kan niet zeggen dat het tegenvalt...

On Thursday I had a meeting with my supervisor, Hatem Zurob. Here we discussed my initial results and made plans for the next few weeks. I have also told him that I found myself unable to do something for my internship too often. He told me he was unsure if he should offer me more project work, but now he knows he can throw anything at me and I will gladly do it. I'm here to learn new things, not to sit around and do nothing...
Friday I cleaned some more of my samples (painful process, as using sandpaper for 2 hours in a row kinda hurts...) and in the afternoon I calibrated the CO2 controller and dryer together with another grad student, Sean.
Friday evening I went for a draft again, this time without Tina and Jake, and this time I did great. I ended up being second in the tournament, due to the fact that my opponents were somewhat worse than those of 1st place. It was great fun, though and I had a good time.
Today I got my first Canadian haircut for only $15,00CAD. Not too expensive and the haircut was good and quick. After the haircut I decided to go up to Ancaster and cycle a part of the Bruce trail. Today is a hot day with lots of sunshine, so I could really give my new lens a good spin. First I got lucky with squirrels near a feeding station (filled with bread). Continuing down the path I didn't see a lot of wildlife, but I did get a beautiful view over Hamilton. Too bad a fence ruined the view quite a bit. I did get a nice panoramic view of the McMaster University, though.
After cycling the entire trail, I went back the other way. On the last part I got seriously lucky and spotted a family of deer. I got some females and the kid on photo. All in all it was a great way to test out my new lens!

Niet slecht voor een eerste resultaat, of niet soms?
Donderdag heb ik een bespreking met mijn begeleider, Hatem Zurob, gehad. We hebben mijn eerste resultaten doorgenomen en plannen gemaakt voor de komende weken. Ik heb hem ook verteld dat ik vond dat ik te vaak niets te doen heb. Blijkbaar was Hatem terughoudend, omdat hij niet zeker wist of ik veel werk tegelijk aankon. Nu weet hij echter dat ik maar al te graag extra dingen naast mijn hoofd project doe. Ik ben hier tenslotte om nieuwe dingen te leren en niet om stil te zitten.
Vrijdag heb ik wat samples schoongemaakt... dit is een pijnlijk proces, aangezien ik 2 uur nonstop heb moeten schuren. 's Middags hebben Sean, een grad student, en ik de CO2 controller en droger gecalibreerd.
Vrijdag avond ben ik weer naar een draft toernooi gegaan, ditmaal zonder Tina en Jake. Het was heel gezellig en ik heb blijkbaar goed gespeeld. Ik ben tweede geworden, doordat mijn tegenstanders klaarblijkelijk iets slechter waren dan die van de nummer 1. Het was echter zeer gezellig en ik heb dan ook genoten.
Vandaag heb ik een bezoek gebracht aan de Canadese kapper. Ik heb mijn haar laten kortwieken voor slechts $15,00CAD, wat niet echt duur is en het was nog goed en snel ook. Hierna had ik besloten naar Ancaster te fietsen en een stuk van het Bruce Trail te fietsen. Het was vandaag zeer warm en er was bijna geen wolk in de lucht. Ideaal dus om mijn nieuwe lens te testen.
Het eerste geluk dat ik had waren wat eekhoorns bij een brood-huisje. Verder op de route kwam ik geen dieren meer tegen, maar ik kreeg wel een zeer mooi uitzicht op de stad Hamilton. Helaas verpest een hek hier het uitzicht, maar ik heb wel een mooie panorama van de McMaster University kunnen maken. Na de gehele route te hebben gefietst ben ik dezelfde weg terug gegaan. Op het laatste stuk had ik enorm veel geluk en ben ik een familie van herten tegengekomen. Ik heb een aantal vrouwtjes en het kind op de foto kunnen zetten. Al met al dus een perfecte manier om mijn nieuwe lens te testen!

Monday is labour day and Mahan, me and his friends have decided to head to Waterfront park to relax and have a nice picnic. That's going to be great!

Maandag is Labour Day en Mahan, ik en zijn vrienden hebben besloten naar Waterfront park te gaan om uit te rusten en lekker te picnic-en. Dat wordt vast en zeker gezellig!

Canada 2009 - WHMIS Core

Finally, after almost a month of waiting, I have been able to follow the WHMIS Core training course last Wednesday. A 1.5 hours of training followed by a quick quiz and I was officially allowed into the labs of the McMaster. The course basically tells you how to handle dangerous chemicals and what labels one must read and understand before doing so. It's good to know what labels mean what, because some chemicals can cause serious harm to ones health.
The rest of the week I couldn't do that much really. I have been waiting for polishing on last Friday and before that all I could do was get some more training in some of the equipment and prepare samples for my side-project. Thus I spent some time in the afternoons visiting Dundas Valley, to photograph some of the insect life.
Yesterday I played some more Magic, which was a lot of fun. I also visited Henry's again, to drool at the tele-zoom lens I want to buy. I think that I finally made my choice on the lens, now I just need to get the salary from McMaster. This allows me to have a proper budget estimate for my internship, so that I know if I have enough money available for the lens.
I really have no other news right now. Perhaps I'll have some more next week.

Eindelijk, na bijna een maand wachten, heb ik de WHMIS Core training kunnen volgen. Deze was gepland afgelopen woensdag en duurde anderhalf uur. Hierna kregen we een korte quiz en nu ben ik bevoegd om in de labs van de McMaster dingen te doen. De training ging over hoe men chemicaliën moet hanteren en welke labels bekend moesten zijn. Het is handig dat je dit weet, want veel van de chemicaliën op de McMaster zijn zeer gevaarlijk voor de gezondheid.
De rest van de week heb ik niet heel veel kunnen doen. Ik heb vooral gewacht op het polijsten van mijn samples afgelopen vrijdag. Verder heb ik vooral de samples van mijn zij-project voorbereid. Hierdoor heb ik wat meer vrije tijd gehad en ben daarom een aantal middagen de Dundas Valley ingetrokken om de lokale insecten te fotograferen.
Gisteren heb ik weer Magic gespeeld. Ook dit keer was het weer erg leuk en gezellig. Verder ben ik ook weer naar Henry's gegaan om naar de tele-lens, die ik wil kopen, te staren. Ik denk dat ik eindelijk weet welke lens ik wil kopen en nu is het wachten op mijn salaris van de McMaster. Als ik dit binnen heb kan ik een goede schatting opstellen van mijn budget, waardoor ik weet of ik de lens kan betalen.
Verder heb ik niet veel nieuws... misschien volgende week meer.

Canada 2009 - Minor update

The third week is over and there isn't really much to say. I've been working on my project... I have done two tensile tests and am now waiting for the rest of the analysis. Here on McMaster the waiting times are quite long, since a lot of people are using the same equipment. I was therefore offered some kind of side project that I have accepted. This means that I can do a different project while waiting for the results of my main project.
For the social part of my life in Canada I am happy to say that I have been able to continue my greatest hobby: Magic the Gathering. Tina, one of Mahan's friends, and her roommate are both very much into MTG. Friday we went to a FNM (Friday Night Magic) Draft tournament at the local MTG store. For $13,00 one buys 3 boosters (15 cards each) and then basically makes a deck out of cards one gets from the boosters. It's a very fun way of getting cards and learning to create decks from limited resources. It was a great evening and I had a lot of fun. I finished fourth in the tournament and received a nice card as a reward. Afterwards we went to Tina's and her roommate (Jake)'s home. Around midnight I headed home.
So I'm delighted to say that I am able to continue with my hobbies. I don't really have any other news... I've started living in Canada the way I live in Holland and I can't say I am unhappy about it.

De derde week zit er alweer op en ik heb niet veel nieuws te vertellen. Ik heb vooral aan mijn project gewerkt... Ik heb twee trekproeven gedaan en wacht nu op de rest van de analyse. Hier op de McMaster is de wachttijd voor apparatuur vrij land, aangezien iedereen zo ongeveer dezelfde apparaten nodig heeft voor de projecten. Mede hierdoor hebben ze mij een tweede project aangeboden. Dit project zal ik doen terwijl ik wacht op de resultaten van mijn echte project. Hierdoor blijf ik bezig en verdoe ik mijn tijd niet.
Het sociale deel van mijn Canadese leven gaat ook goed. Ik heb afgelopen vrijdag voor het eerst weer mijn grootste hobby kunnen beoefenen, namelijk Magic the Gathering (MTG). Tina, ik en haar huisgenoot (Jake) zijn naar de Friday Night Magic (FNM) avond van de lokale MTG winkel gegaan en daar hebben we gedraft. Voor $13.00 koop je 3 boosters en van de kaarten die je hieruit haalt maak je een deck. Vervolgens speel je een klein toernooi met het zojuist gemaakte deck. Dit is een ideale manier van kaarten krijgen en ook nog eens zeer leerzaam. Het was een geweldige avond. Ik werd vierde in het toernooi en heb daarom een mooie kaart gewonnen. Na het toernooi zijn we naar Tina's en Jake's kamer gegaan. Rond middernacht ben ik naar huis gegaan.
Ik kan dus mijn hobby's gewoon doorzetten. Verder heb ik niet veel nieuws te vertellen... Ik leef in Canada nu ongeveer hetzelfde als in Nederland en kan niet zeggen dat het tegenvalt.

Canada 2009 - Second week

The second week at McMaster has ended. I have finally been appointed a work space, but it is not what I had hoped for. The McMaster does not have as many desks as they have students, so I have been appointed to work at a table in the graduate students office. It's not a real desk, but at least it's in a closed area and I won't be present that much anyway. Most of the time I will be doing experimental work.
The past week was similar to the first week. I read some theory and worked a bit on a project, from home, that I haven't finished yet. I finally booked some promising results on that project, so that should be going fine from now on too. For my internship I accompanied one of my supervisors in the labs. This to get familiar with the equipment and to see what the McMaster is all about. Friday I cleaned two of my samples and tomorrow (Monday) we will give them a heat treatment. I then hope to have my first real results by the end of the week. I will do some mechanical tensile tests and then look at the the failure of my samples.
Now for the social aspect of my life in Canada. I have spent some more time with Mahan and his friends. He has a nice group of friends that I can easily get along with. I made some appointments to play Magic with some of his friends in the near future.
Wednesday, the 12th, Mahan, his girlfriend and me headed for lake Niapenco to watch a meteor shower. We didn't end up seeing a lot of meteors, I think about 5. I took some photo's of the sky in the hope of catching one on photo. That didn't work out, but I did get two nice shots of the sky.

De tweede week voor mijn stage aan de McMaster zit er op. Ik heb eindelijk een werkplek toegewezen gekregen, maar het niet helemaal wat ik had gehoopt. De McMaster heeft meer studenten dan dat ze werkplekken hebben. Hierdoor zit ik aan een tafel in de graduate students ruimte. Het is geen bureau, maar het is tenminste wel een afgesloten ruimte en ik zal er zowieso niet te vaak aanwezig zijn. Het grootste deel van mijn tijd zal experimenteel werk zijn.
De afgelopen week was vrijwel hetzelfde als mijn vorige week. Ik heb wat theorie gelezen en wat gewerkt aan een project van thuis. Dit project loopt al een tijd, maar is nog steeds niet af. Ik heb eindelijk goede resultaten weten te behalen voor dit project, dus ook dit gaat goedkomen. Voor mijn stage heb ik een van mijn geleiders geholpen in de labs. Dit zodat ik bekend raak met de apparaten en om te zien wat de McMaster allemaal doet. Vrijdag heb ik twee van mijn samples schoongemaakt en morgen (maandag) ga ik deze een warmtebehandeling geven. Ik hoop vervolgens aan het einde van de week mijn eerste echte resultaten te hebben. Ik ga een trekproef op de samples doen en daarna naar het falen van de samples kijken.
Dan nu over het sociale aspect van mijn leven in Canada. Ik heb deze week nog wat meer tijd met Mahan en zijn vriendengroep gespendeerd. Het is een zeer leuke vriendengroep en het is zeer gezellig. Ik heb ook wat afspraken gemaakt om een keer met een stel van zijn vrienden te gaan Magicen.
Woensdag (12 augustus) zijn Mahan, zijn vriendin en ik naar lake Niapenco gegaan om naar een sterrenregen te kijken. We hebben uiteindelijk niet veel vallende sterren gezien, waarschijnlijk een stuk of 5. Ik heb wat foto's van de sterrenhemel gemaakt in de hoop een vallende ster te zien, maar dit is niet gelukt. Wel heb ik wat foto's van de Canadese sterrenhemel.

Yesterday (Saturday) I headed for a Photography store, called Henry's. Here I bought a wireless remote for my camera and a bag for one of my lenses. The trip to Henry's was a little more extreme than I had hoped. On Google Maps is was almost 7 km, but what Google didn't tell me was that it was up-hill. The weather was really hot with a high humidity so the trip took longer then expected. The way back was a lot better, since that was downhill.
After that I headed for the McMaster University to finally be able to show you all what the McMaster looks like. After photographing the McMaster I headed for a trail system behind the McMaster. Here I took some shots of the nature and around 4.30PM I headed back home. I ate dinner and after that me and Mahan headed for the Dundas Cactus Festival. Here we met up with two friends of Mahan and had a good time. The festival wasn't that great, but it sure beats staying inside. After the festival we headed for Tina's (one of Mahan's friends) place and watch the movie V for Vendetta. All in all we had a great time. Below some shots of McMaster, the trail and the festival.

Gisteren (zaterdag) ben ik richting een fotografie winkel gegaan, genaamd Henry's. Hier heb ik een draadloze afstandsbediening voor mijn camera en een tas voor een van mijn lenzen gekocht. De route naar Henry's was wat extremer dan ik had ingeschat. Google Maps vertelde mij dat het ongeveer 7 km is, maar wat mij niet verteld werd is dat dit op een helling was. Het was goed warm buiten en de luchtvochtigheid was hoog. De tocht terug was veel makkelijk, aangezien dit naar beneden was.
Hierna ben ik richting de McMaster gegaan, zodat ik jullie eindelijk kan laten zien hoe de McMaster er eigenlijk uitziet. Na de McMaster te hebben gefotografeerd ben ik richting een trail systeem achter de McMaster gegaan. Hier heb ik de natuur gefotografeerd en rond 16:30 ben ik terug naar huis gegaan. Na mijn avondeten te hebben verorbert, zijn Mahan en ik richting het Dundas Cactus Festival gegaan. Hier kwamen we twee vrienden van Mahan tegen en hebben we het erg gezellig gehad. Het festival zelf was niet geweldig, maar het was zeker beter dan binnen blijven. Na het festival zijn we naar Tina's (een van Mahan's vriendinnen) kamer gegaan en hier hebben we V for Vendetta gekeken. We hebben het dus erg naar ons zin gehad. Canada 2009 - First week + Festival of Friends

The first week at McMaster
Well, that was the first week of my internship. So far I must say that I can't complain. I haven't done that much yet, besides reading the thesis and arranging formalities... but the university is great and I have lots to do. I have to read a lot of theory before I can actually start my internship and the reason for this is that I study Mechanical Engineering at home and I'm doing an internship with the department of Materials Science and Engineering. This means I have to bridge a theory-gap, which takes time. With that comes the fact that I'm working on an experimental project, which also means reading previously done work. I like the challenge of doing work in a different field of research, so this is a great way to do so. I have arranged almost all the formalities now and all that's left is for me to be assigned a room. I've been working in a computer room so far and this is not the most comfortable way of working. Next week I should have my own place in a graduate student's room. Oh, before I forget, the title of my project is "Plasticity-induced phase transitions in High-Manganese Steels". I won't go into details here, but I'm doing research at how these steels fail (ductile, brittle or a combination).

De eerste week op de McMaster
Zo, de eerste week zit erop. Tot nu toe heb ik vooral gelezen en wat formaliteiten geregeld, maar ik mag zeker niet klagen. De universiteit is leuk en goed ingericht en ik heb genoeg te doen. Ik moet veel lezen voordat ik mijn stage echt kan beginnen en de reden hiervoor is dat ik geen stage loop bij Werktuigbouwkunde maar bij de faculteit voor Materiaalkunde. Hierdoor heb ik een kloof in theoretische kennis te overbruggen en dit kost tijd. Daar komt nog eens bovenop dat ik een experimenteel project heb, waardoor er veel voorgaand werk gelezen moet worden. I houd wel van een uitdaging en dit is de ideale manier hiervoor. De meeste formaliteiten zijn nu wel geregeld en wat er overblijft is mijn kamer. Tot nu toe heb ik in een computerruimte gezeten en dit is verre van ideaal. Volgende week zou ik een werkplaats, in een kamer voor master-studenten, toegewezen moet krijgen. Oh, voordat ik het vergeet... mijn project heeft "Plasticity-induced phase transitions in High-Manganese Steels". Een hele mondvol en ik ga dan ook geen moeite doen om op de details in te gaan. Het komt erop neer dat ik ga onderzoeken wat de faal-mechanismen in deze materialen zijn (ductiel, bros of een combinatie hiervan).

Festival of Friends
Yesterday evening (Friday) my roommate, Mahan, invited me to come along to a festival here in Hamilton, called the Festival of Friends. I decided to come as I had nothing planned anyway. One of Mahan's friends, Tina, also came along. It was a nice festival with some bands playing songs too. Since the festival was free, the bands weren't the best around, but it was still nice. Below some shots of the evening.

Gisteravond (vrijdag) nodigde mijn kamergenoot, Mahan, mij uit om mee te gaan naar een festival hier in Hamilton, genaamd het Festival of Friends. Ik besloot mee te gaan aangezien ik toch niets gepland had. Tina, een van Mahan's vrienden ging ook mee. Het was een leuk festival met een aantal bands die wat nummers speelden. Aangezien het festival gratis was, waren de bands niet de beste van de wereld, maar het was nog steeds goed aan te horen. Hieronder wat foto's van de avond.

Next week I should start some experiments, so then my internship should really be starting. Monday I have lunch planned with my supervisor and some German exchange students, so that should also be good.

Canada 2009 - McMaster University

Today I had my first day at the McMaster University. At 10.00AM it was time to meet my supervisor, Dr. Hatem Zurob from the department of Materials Science and Engineering. This is the department that does a lot of metallurgical research on metals and composites. My supervisor is a really nice guy, who doesn't mind my strange sense of humor so far. We had the first meeting and immediately I was given some bad news. I was supposed to travel all the way up to Chalk River, where the Canadian Neutron Beam Centre is located. Here I would perform Neutron Diffraction experiments for my projects. However, this trip has been canceled due to the fact that the CNBC is closed for maintenance. Apparently there was a heavy water leakage, which was causing problems. This is not allowed, since the CNBC is located at a nuclear reactor, which creates the neutrons, but also a lot of isotopes required for medical research and production of antidotes. Thus the facility is closed until late December - January. By this time my internship has ended (December 24th). I was a bit disappointed by this, as the trip would've been an adventure all by itself. But that's the nature of research... things tend to go wrong and not as planned. I'm sure my internship will still be good, though.
After the meeting I had a short tour of the facilities, but I did not enter the laboratories, where I will be performing experiments, yet since I'm not allowed to enter them until I have completed some security courses. The McMaster is really strict with security policies, so I will have to be present at some of these courses before I can enter the labs. This to make sure I don't decide to drink cyanide or cut of a finger with a saw or something. Better make sure, I like to try things...
I was given a big book which contains a Masters thesis of a previous student of McMaster's. The rest of the day I spent reading the thesis. I'm now about 30% in. It's an interesting thesis, thus I don't mind the reading. I also handed in the government forms I had to fill in and now I should be in the system within a couple of days.
At 5.00PM I went for dinner with my roommate, Mahan. He invited me for dinner at a place called the Phoenix, which is conveniently located at the McMaster campus. It was a good and cheap place and I had a good (free) dinner.
Thus not much has really happened yet, the university is nice and I definitely think I'll have a great internship. We'll see what the future brings us!

Vandaag had ik mijn eerste dag op de McMaster University. Om 10:00 was het tijd om mijn begeleider te ontmoeten, Dr. Hatem Zurob van de afdeling Materials Science and Engineering (Materiaalkunde in de volksmond). Dit is de afdeling die onderzoek doet op metalen en composieten. Mijn begeleider is een aardige man, die zelfs met mijn raar gevoel voor humor overweg lijkt te kunnen. We hadden onze eerste vergadering en meteen al kreeg ik slecht nieuws te horen. De bedoeling was namelijk dat ik naar Chalk River zou gaan, waar het Canadian Neutron Beam Centre te vinden is. Hier zou ik Neutron Diffraction metingen gaan verrichten voor mijn project. Echter, deze tocht is afgeblazen omdat het CNBC is gesloten voor onderhoud. Blijkbaar was er een zwaar water lekkage en dit veroorzaakte veel problemen. Dit mag niet aangezien het CNBC zich langs een nucleaire reactor bevindt. Deze reactor maakt de neutronen, maar ook isotopen voor medisch onderzoek en voor het maken van geneesmiddelen. Het CNBC is daarom gesloten tot laat december - januari. Tegen die tijd ben ik klaar met mijn stage (24 December). Ik was toch wel teleurgesteld want deze toch zou een avontuur op zich zijn. Maar dit is helaas de aard van onderzoek... dingen gaan fout of niet zoals gepland. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat mijn stage nog steeds leuk zal zijn.
Na de vergadering heb ik een korte rondleiding door de faculteit gekregen. Ik mocht echter de laboratoria nog niet binnen, want hiervoor moet je eerst een aantal veiligheids trainingen hebben gevolgd. De McMaster is zeer strict in het verzekeren van veiligheid, waardoor ik een veiligheids training zal moeten volgen. Dit is om er zeker van te zijn dat ik niet besluit een slok cyanide te nemen of mijn vinger af te zagen. Tja, zo ben ik ook echt...
Ik heb vervolgens een dik boek gekregen. Dit bleek een master proefschrift van een oude student te zijn. Dit heb ik de rest van de dag doorgelezen en ben nu op ongeveer een derde. Het is een interessant proefschrift, dus dit vind ik niet vervelend. Ik heb ook een aantal formulieren van de regering ingeleverd. Hierdoor zou ik over een paar dagen in het systeem moeten staan.
Rond 17:00 ben ik, samen met mijn huisgenoot (Mahan), gaan dineren. Hij had mij uitgenodigd bij een restaurant, genaamd de Phoenix. Deze ligt ideaal... op de campus. Het was een goede tent en het eten was lekker en niet duur.
Verder is er niet veel gebeurd. De universiteit is goed en ik weet zeker dat ik hier een goede tijd tegemoet ga. We zullen zien wat de toekomst brengt!

Canada 2009 - Hamilton Harbour Waterfront Trail

Today I decided I wanted to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens here in Hamilton. After Skype-ing with a good friend of mine, whose now in South-Korea, I left the house around 11.00AM. I already noticed that this was quite late, since I had to cycle for 9 km before reaching the Royal Botanical Gardens in the first place. I left anyway and easy found the route towards the RBC. However, when I was cycling allong side Highway 403, I noticed that I couldn't cross the bay easily, but I did discover I nice bike trail in the vicinity... The Hamilton Harbour Waterfront Trail. This trail departs near the bay of Hamilton and is about 3.4km long. I decided to cycle this trail and see what's what. I'll save the RBC for some other time.
It was a very nice trail with a great view on the harbour and bay of Hamilton. The authorities have put in a great effort to make this a nice trail and it sure shows! Below some shots of the trail.

Ik had meteen al door dat dit vrij laat was, aangezien ik ongeveer 9 km moest fietsen naar de RBC. Ik ben toch op pad gegaan en al snel vond ik de weg naar de RBC. De Hamilton Harbour Waterfront Trail. Deze route vertrekt bij de baai van Hamilton en is ongeveer 3.4 km lang. Ik besloot deze route te doen en de RBC voor later te bewaren.
Het was een hele mooie route met een prachtig uitzicht op de haven en baai van Hamilton. De overheid heeft veel moeite gestoken in deze route en dit is te zien! Hieronder wat foto's van de route.

After all of this, I was getting tired... I had been cycling for over 2 hours. Yes, the trail was that beautiful. I decided to go back home, do some grocery shopping and call it a day. I also have to get some rest before I start my internship...

Nadat ik meer dan 2 uur had gefietst (de route is heel mooi) werd ik langzaamaan wat moe. Ik ben terug naar huis gegaan en heb nog wat inkopen gedaan. Ik heb ook wat rust nodig voor ik mijn stage start...

Canada 2009 - Chapter II

Today we woke up around 11.00AM and after Bart took a shower (his last Canadian shower) we headed for the nearest Subway restaurant to eat breakfast. We both had a footlong Italian bread and it tasted really good. After that we headed for the Canadian Tire shop at Upper James Street. There I bought a complete bike. I expected it to be a build-it-yourself kit, but it wasn't. I could actually roll the bike out of the shop and cycle home if I wanted to. I put it in the car instead and we headed back home. We didn't do much the rest of the afternoon, except for Bart packing his stuff.
Around 7.00PM this evening, Bart left my home and headed for Toronto Pearson International Airport. There he would drop off the car and fly back to Amsterdam, via London Heathrow. After he left, I took my new gadget for a spin:

Vandaag werden we rond 11:00 wakker en, nadat Bart zijn laatste Canadese douche had genomen, zijn we richting het dichtstbijzijnde Subway restaurant gegaan voor ons ontbijt. Hier hebben we allebei een 33cm lang brood gehad en dit smaakte zeer goed. Hierna zijn we naar de Canadian Tire op Upper James Street gegaan. Hier heb ik een fiets gekocht. Ik verwachtte, net als in Nederland, dat ik de fiets niet meteen mee kon krijgen of dat het een doe-het-zelf kit zou zijn. Dit was niet het geval en ik kon de fiets, gebouwd en wel, meteen meenemen. Ik heb de fiets in de auto geladen en we zijn naar huis gegaan. Hier hebben we niet veel spannends meer gedaan, behalve dat Bart zijn koffers heeft ingepakt.
Rond 19:00 is Bart richting Toronto Pearson International Airport gegaan. Hier zou hij de auto dumpen en terug naar Amsterdam vliegen, via London Heathrow.
Nadat hij was weggereden heb ik mijn nieuw speeltje getest:

It's not the best bike one can buy, but hey, what can you expect of a bike that costs $109.99? I also bought a front and read light and a bell. Oh and of course a lock (duh). All in all I am now $179.48 lighter, but at least I have transportation.
Now that Bart has left, I'm on my own. I'm still looking forward to my internship and can't wait until it's tuesday. My blogposts will now be less frequent, but I will still post the important details of my adventures in Canada.

Het is zeker niet de beste fiets die je kunt kopen, maar wat kun je anders verwachten van een fiets van $109.99 (€72.15)? Ik heb er ook een voor- en achterlicht bij gekocht en natuurlijk een slot. Het totaalplaatje kostte mij $179.48 (€117,39), maar nu heb ik tenminste vervoer.
Aangezien Bart nu weg is, ben ik op mijzelf aangewezen. Ik kijk nog steeds uit naar mijn stage en kan niet wachten tot het dinsdag is. Mijn blogposts zullen nu wat minder frequent worden, maar de belangrijke details van mijn Canadese avonturen zal ik nog steeds posten.

Canada 2009 - Final roadtrip

Today we departed from our B&B in Russell and headed for my room in Hamilton. This is the final big roadtrip we're making as Bart is flying back to Holland tomorrow night. The trip was good, but the weather wasn't. Near Toronto we hit traffic jams and we arrived back in Hamilton around 5.00PM. I made a couple of shots of the weather and Toronto's traffic and these are shown below.

Vandaag verlieten we onze B&B in Russell en gingen naar mijn kamer in Hamilton. Dit is de laatste grote reis, die Bart en ik maken, aangezien Bart morgennacht terug vliegt naar Nederland. De reis verliep goed, maar het weer was slecht. Bij Toronto kwamen we terecht in de file en we arriveerden rond 17:00 in Hamilton. Ik heb onderweg een paar foto's gemaakt van het weer en het verkeer rondom Toronto, deze staat hieronder.

Not much else to tell really... Tomorrow after Bart leaves my true adventure starts. I just heard that I have next Monday off, which would've been my first day at work. Apparently the Canadians have come up with a holiday called Civic day. My first meeting with my project leader has been postponed to tuesday, August 4rd.

Verder is er niet veel te vertellen... Morgen, nadat Bart vertrokken is, begint mijn ware avontuur. Ik heb zojuist vernomen dat ik aanstaande maandag vrij heb. Dit zou mijn eerste werkdag zijn geweest, maar blijkbaar hebben de Canadezen een feestdag genaamd Civic day bedacht. Mijn eerste ontmoeting met mijn project leider is daarom verzet naar aanstaande dinsdag, 4 Augustus.

Yesterday we visited the capital of Canada, Ottawa. Ottawa is located on the border between the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. It's a multicultural city with museums and Parliament Hill. We parked our car in an underground parking garage of a museum and started walking towards Parliament Hill. The route towards Parliament Hill offers a lot of beautiful views and thus I took a lot of photos on the way to the hill. Parliamant Hill is a collection of buildings were the Canadian Government gathers. The weather was sunny with clouds. The clouds did not look friendly as we arrived at Parliament Hill and sure enough... it started raining soon. We waited for the rain to stop and headed to the shopping street. Here we visited some stores and then headed for the Currency Museum. This is a free of charge museum in the Bank of Canada and contains a lot of old money. On the way there it started raining again, so we sought shelter once more. We visited the museum and then headed for the Rideau Shopping Centre. This is a large shopping centre. Bart bought some clothes and when we left the Centre, we headed back to Parliament Hill in the hope of finding less tourists this time. That wasn't the case so we headed towards a restaurant. We found a nice place and had dinner here. After this we headed back to Russell. Below shots of the entire trip. Some nice panorama's are included also.

Gisteren hebben we de hoofdstad van Canada, Ottawa, bezocht. Ottawa ligt op de grens tussen de provincie Ontario en Quebec. Het is een multiculturele stad met veel musea en Parliament Hill. We hebben onze auto in een parkeergarage van een museum geparkeerd en zijn toen richting Parliament Hill gegaan. De weg naar Parliament Hill heeft een aantal mooie uitzichten en hier heb ik dus ook veel foto's genomen. Parliament Hill is een verzameling gebouwen waar het Canadese Parlement vergaderd. Het was zonnig met veel wolken en tegen de tijd dat we bij Parliament Hill aankwamen zag het er niet zo goed meer uit. Al snel begon het te regenen, dus we hebben bij Parliament Hill gescholen tot de regen ophield. Hierna zijn we naar de winkelstraat van Ottawa gegaan. Hier hebben we wat winkels bezocht en zijn toen richting het Currency Museum gegaan. Dit is een gratis museum in de Bank of Canada en hier is veel oud geld te zien. Onderweg begon het wederom te regenen en we hebben dus weer moeten schuilen. We hebben toen het museum bezocht en zijn daarna naar Rideau Shopping Centre gegaan. Dit is een groot winkelcentrum en hier heeft Bart wat kleren gekocht. Hierna zijn we nogmaals naar Parliament Hill gegaan in de hoop dat er nu minder touristen waren. Dit was natuurlijk niet het geval dus toen zijn we richting een restaurant gegaan. We hebben gedineerd en zijn toen naar Russel terug gegaan. Beautiful! Today we're taking a rest day, as our feet require this. I developed some blisters after the trip to Montréal and definitely felt this yesterday.

Today we headed for the city of Montréal. This would be the first time we would actually leave the province of Ontario and enter Quebec. Quebec is the French talking province of Canada, but they also speak English... lucky for us.
We left the B&B, after a lovely breakfast, around 10.00AM and arrived about 2 hours later. Montréal is quite a big city, so we parked our car somewhere downtown and started walking to the Notre-Dame. Yes, there is actually a Notre-Dame in Montréal. It's a copy of the one found in Paris. This one is located between skyscrapers, whichs gives quite a strange view. We planned on going in, but since there were a lot of tourists present we decided not to. We decided to head for Le Stade Olympique de Montréal, the Olympic Stadium of Montréal. This is a large stadium, shaped like a swan (I think).
We actually walked to the Stadium... a big mistake since it was a 6 km walk and we did not anticipate this at all. Oh well, our feet now hurt badly. Below some shots of the Notre-Dame, Montréal and the Olympic Stadium.

Vandaag zijn we richting Montréal gegaan. Dit hield in dat we voor de eerste keer de provincie Ontario zouden verlaten en Quebec in zouden gaan. Quebec is de Franstalige provincie van Canada, maar ze spreken, gelukkig voor ons, ook Engels.
We verlieten de B&B, na een geweldig ontbijt, rond 10:00 en kwamen 2 uur later aan in Montréal. Aangezien Montréal een vrij grote stad is parkeerden we onze auto ergens in het centrum en liepen richting de Notre-Dame. Ja, er is echt een Notre-Dame in Montréal. Het is een kopie van die in Parijs. Deze is echter geplaatst midden tussen de wolkenkrabbers, wat nogal een raar beeld geeft. We wilden eigenlijk naar binnen gaan, maar gezien de touristdichtheid besloten we dit niet te doen. We besloten toen richting de Le Stade Olympique de Montréal te gaan. Dit is het Olympisch Stadion van Montréal. Het is een groot stadion, wat gevorm is als een zwaan (denk ik).
We zijn naar het stadion gelopen... een grove fout aangezien het 6 km lopen was en dit hadden we niet verwacht. Achja, nu doen onze voeten pijn. Hieronder foto's van de Notre-Dame, Montréal en het Olympisch Stadion.

As you can see, it's a nice building. The weather wasn't that good again, so we decided to go back to downtown and have dinner. After dinner at Burger King, we headed for Mont Royal. Mont Royale is a mountain in the middle of Montréal and gives a great view over the skyscrapers of Montréal. Below the shots of the view. As you can see, it was cloudy.

Zoals duidelijk te zien is is het een mooi gebouw. Het weer was alweer niet geweldig, dus we besloten terug te gaan naar het centrum om te dineren. We hebben gedineerd bij de Burger King en zijn daarna richting Mont Royal gegaan. Mont Royal is een berg in het midden van Montréal en geeft een geweldig uitzicht over de hoogbouw van Montréal. Hieronder de foto's van dit uitzicht. Zoals te zien is was het bewolkt.

After looking at the view for a while, we headed back to Russell. Tomorrow we're heading for Ottawa.

Na een tijd van het uitzicht te hebben genoten zijn we terug naar Russell gegaan. Morgen gaan we naar Ottawa.

Canada 2009 - Past 4 days

July 22nd, 2009 - Blackwater Lake Guest House

This day we drove to our third B&B address, Blackwater Lake Guest House. It is located near the city of Parry Sound and has a great view at the Blackwater lake. The house is quite nice and the location is just wonderful. However, the hostess gave some problems before we arrived, since she wanted a payment in advance. We didn't like that concept, but had no choice. There were a lot of problems getting the money to them and eventually that even failed. In the end she settled for a cash payment at the moment of arrival. All these troubles lead to us having quite a negative feeling of the B&B before we even arrived, so we have to see what's what. Below some shots of the location and the lake.

Deze dag reden we naar ons derde B&B adres, Black Water Lake Guest House. Deze B&B ligt dicht bij de stad Parry Sound en heeft een geweldig uitzicht op het meer Blackwater. Het huis is best leuk en de locatie is prachtig. Echter, de gastvrouw heeft ons wat problemen bezorgd al voor we hier arriveerden. We moesten namelijk vooruit betalen en dit stond ons toen al niet echt aan. We hadden echter niet veel keus. We hebben veel moeite moeten doen om het geld bij haar te krijgen en dit is uiteindelijk zelfs niet gelukt. Uiteindelijk nam ze genoegen met de eis dat we het geld bij aankomst zouden betalen. Door al deze problemen hebben we een negatief gevoel gehad alvorens we arriveerden, dus het is maar hopen dat het allemaal meevalt. Hieronder een aantal foto's van de locatie en het meer.

July 23rd, 2009 - Algonquin Provincial Park

This day we planned to go hiking in Algonquin Provincial Park. This is quite a long drive from our B&B... about 2 hours. We had a bad feeling about the day from the moment we woke up... it was raining. The entire trip it kept raining and when we arrived it was still raining. We decided to wait a while to see if it would stop raining. We walked around the Information Office and drove to some of the trails. The weather didn't get any better, so around 1.00PM we decided to head back to our B&B address and spent the rest of the day there. We drove back in the rain and even when we arrived it was still raining. It didn't stop raining until about 8.00PM in the evening. It had rained for over 12 hours. I didn't take any photos this day, since there was nothing interesting to photograph. Better luck next time.
We hoped the weather would be better the next day, since we would go visit Killbear Provincial Park.

Deze dag hadden we gepland om te gaan hiken in Algonquin Provincial Park. Dit is vrij ver weg van onze B&B... ongeveer 2 uur rijden. We hadden bij het wakker worden al een slecht gevoel bij het weer... het regende. De gehele rit hebben we in de regen gereden en toen we bij Algonquin aankwamen regende het nog steeds. We besloten een tijdje te wachten om te kijken of het weer beter werd. We hebben een tijdje bij het Information Office rondgelopen en zijn naar een aantal trails gereden. Het weer werd niet beter, dus rond 13:00 zijn we terug naar ons B&B adres gereden. Hier zouden we de rest van de dag doorbrengen. We zijn terug gereden in de regen en zelfs toen we aankwamen regende het nog steeds. De regen stopte pas rond 20:00. Het heeft dus meer dan 12 uur geregend. Ik heb daarom ook geen foto's gemaakt, aangezien er niets interessants te fotograferen was. Volgende keer beter. We hoopten dat het weer de volgende dag beter zou zijn, aangezien we Killbear Provincial Park wilden gaan bekijken.

July 24rd, 2009 - Killbear Provincial Park

This day we went to Killbear Provincial Park. Killbear is a small park located west of Parry Sound and is known for it's shoreline with large rocks. We had better weather than the previous day... Cloudy with only small rain falls.
We first walked the Lighthouse trail, which is a small trail that leads to the shoreline and has a view on the Lighthouse. Shots of this trail are shown below.

Deze dag zijn we naar Killbear Provincial Park gegaan. Killbear is een vrij klein park ten westen van Parry Sound en is bekend door de kustlijn met grote rotspartijen. Het weer was beter dan de dag ervoor... bewolkt met slechts kleine regenbuien. We hebben als eerste het Lighthouse Trail gelopen. Dit is een kleine route die naar de kustlijn leidt. Hier is een mooi zicht op een vuurtoren. Hieronder een aantal foto's van deze route.

After this we did the Lookout Point trail. This is the longest loop trail in the park and gives a good overview of the flora in Killbear and also has a nice view over the bay. We didn't spot any animals on this trail, but we did hear some animals move around. Again, below some shots of the trail.

Hierna hebben we de Lookout Point trail gelopen. Dit is de langste ring route en geeft een goed overzicht van de flora in Killbear. Ook is er een mooi uitzicht op de baai. We hebben geen dieren gezien op de route, maar we hebben we wat dieren horen lopen. Hieronder de foto's van deze route.

After this we hiked our final trail, Twin Point trail. This trail follows a large part of the shoreline and is not too long to hike. We still had a lot of rain, so we waited on the shoreline for it to dry. After taking several shots we headed back to the car, as the weather wasn't clearing up. Below shots of the trail.

Na deze route hebben we onze laatste route gehiked, Twin Point trail. Deze route leidt langs een groot deel van de kustlijn en is niet al te lang om te lopen. Het regende nog steeds veel, dus we hebben op de kust gewacht tot de regen ophield. Nadat ik een aantal foto's had genomen zijn we terug naar de auto gegaan, omdat het weer niet beter werd. Since the weather didn't get any better we headed to Parry Sound and the lookout tower that is located in the hills of Parry Sound. The weather was clearing up on the way to Parry Sound so we did have a nice view up there. Below some shots of the view from the tower and a shot of the old train bridge in Parry Sound.

Omdat het weer niet beter werd zijn we naar Parry Sound en de uitkijktoren, die zich in de heuvels van Parry Sound bevindt, gereden. Het weer werd op weg naar Parry Sound gelijdelijk beter dus we hadden een mooi uitzicht boven in de toren. After this we headed back to our B&B address to rest for our long journey the next day. We're heading for Russell then, a 7 hour drive.

Hierna zijn we terug naar ons B&B adres gegaan om uit te rusten voor de lange trip van de volgende dag. Wij gaan dan naar Russell, een 7 uur durende rit.

As a final say on the B&B: It is a good and friendly B&B and our prejudice were not correct... luckily.

Als laatste over dit B&B adres: Het is een goed en aardig B&B adres en onze vooroordelen waren niet correct... gelukkig.

July 24th, 2009 - Riverview B&B

Today we drove to our fourth and final B&B address, Riverview in Russell. It was a long drive, but we managed just fine. The trip took us about 6 hours and on the way there, I took some photos of Algonquin Provincial Park. These shots are mostly taken from the car, but I at least wanted some shots of the area. These are shown below.

Vandaag zijn we naar ons vierde en laatste B&B adres gereden, Riverview te Russell. Het was een lange rit, maar alles is goed gegaan. We hebben ongeveer 6 uur over de rit gedaan en onderweg heb ik wat foto's genomen van Algonquin National Park. Deze foto's zijn vooral vanuit de auto genomen, maar nu heb ik tenminste wat foto's van het gebied. Deze foto's staan hieronder.

As you can see, the weather was still not that good. When we left the Algonquin area we noticed more and more civilization... We were nearing Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Below a show of the highway after Algonquin.

Duidelijk is dat het weer nog steeds niet geweldig was. Toen we het gebied rond Algonquin verlieten zagen we steeds meer kenmerken van beschaving... We kwamen dichtbij Ottawa, de hoofdstad van Canada. Hieronder een foto van hoe de snelweg na Algonquin eruit ziet.

Canada 2009 - Rock Lake and the French River

Today we had two trips planned. The first one was organized by our host, Bob Fera. He would take us on a trip on the Rock Lake and tell a bit of the lake's history. It was a beautiful morning with lots of sun and the lake's beautiful. We left the B&B by boat around 11.00AM and the trip took about 1.5 hours. The host knew a lot of the lake's history and was a good tour guide. Below some shots of the trip.

Vandaag hadden we twee tochten gepland. De eerste werd georganiseerd door onze gastheer, Bob Fera. Hij zou ons over Rock Lake varen en wat vertellen over de geschiedenis van het meer. Het was een prachtige, zonnige ochtend en het meer was wederom geweldig. We verlieten de B&B per boot rond 11:00 en zijn ongeveer anderhalf uur op het meer geweest. Onze gastheer wist veel van de geschiedenis van het meer en was een goede gids. Hieronder een aantal foto's van de tocht.

After this, we had to wait until 4.00PM to go to our dinner location, a restaurant near our next trip... on the French River. We booked a tour at Rene's Cruises, which was adviced by our host. We booked the trip that started around 7.00PM and takes 2 hours. We had dinner at a nice old restaurant, located in an old school building. At 7.00PM we left the Wolseley Bay and headed for the French River on Rene's boat. Captain Rene was a nice guide and knew a lot about the history of Canada's great lakes and rivers. The tour was amazing and ended even better... a beautiful sunset while we were floating on the river. There was no noise at all... imagin that... We were amazed by the silence. All we could hear was ourselves and the nature around us. The area we visited is an untouched part of Canada. Hardly any lodges can be found here and the nature is pristine. Beautiful! Hierna moesten we tot 16:00 wachten om naar het restaurant te gaan. Dit restaurant ligt dicht bij de locatie van onze tweede tocht... op de French River. We hadden een tocht bij Rene's Cruises geboekt, want dit was door onze gastvrouw geadviseerd. We hadden de toch, die om 19:00 startte, gereserveerd. We hebben gegeten in een restaurant dat gevestigd is in een oud schoolgebouw. Rond 19:00 hebben we Wolseley Bay verlaten en zijn met Rene's boot de French River opgegaan. Kapitein Rene was een aardige gids en wist zeer veel te vertellen over de geschiedenis van Canada's meren en riveren. De toch was geweldig en eindigde nog beter... een prachtige zonsondergang terwijl we op de rivier dreven. Er was geen geluid, behalve dat van ons en de natuur om ons heen... denk daar maar eens over na... Het gebied waar we doorheen voeren is een onaangetast stuk van Canada. Hier zijn bijna geen woningen en de natuur is ongerept. Kortom: prachtig! Hieronder foto's van de tocht en de geweldige zonsondergang.

Canada 2009 - Killarney Provincial Park

Today we went hiking in Killarney Provincial Park. We had breakfast around 8.30AM and headed for Killarney around 10.00AM. After breakfast, I took some shots of the beautiful lake. The fog was evaporating, which gave an amazing view. A shot is shown below. The hosts here also have a humming bird feeder, so I took a shot of a humming bird as well. Also shown below.

Vandaag zijn we gaan hiken in Killarney Provincial Park. We hebben ontbeten rond 8:30 en zijn rond 10:00 richting Kilarney gegaan. Na het ontbijt heb ik een aantal foto's genomen van het prachtige meer. De mist was aan het verdampen wat een prachtig uitzicht gaf. Hieronder een foto hiervan. The gastheer en -vrouw hebben ook een kolibri voeder, waardoor ik ook een foto van een kolibri heb genomen. Ook deze staat hieronder.

We first drove to the village near the park to buy some mosquito repellent. There are more mosquitos here right now than normal, due to the strange summer that Canada has this year. Before one can enter the trails one has to register with the park ranger. We did so and headed for our first trail, Cranberry Bog Trail. This trail is a trail more aimed at the local flora and not so much on views. The trail is about 4 km long and ends right back where it started, near George Lake.
The trail was amazing and the view on the Cranberry Bog was stunning. When we left the bog, we heard some cracking noises in the forest... When we looked what it was, Bart quickly saw that it was a black bear and told me to keep on going. When I looked back at where we saw the bear, I saw the black bear as well. So we did spot a black bear... and we're still alive.
The beauty of the trail once again cannot be express in words. My photos should do the trick once more.

We zijn eerst doorgereden naar het dorp bij het park om wat muggenspray aan te schaffen. Er zijn hier op dit moment enorm veel muggen, veel meer dan normaal. Dit omdat Canada een hele rare zomer heeft dit jaar. Voordat we het park binnen konden, moesten we ons registreren bij de park ranger. Dit hebben we dan ook gedaan en zijn vervolgens richting ons eerste trail gegaan, de Cranberry Bog Trail. Dit is een trail, die meer gericht is op de lokale flora dan op de mooie uitzichten. De Cranberry Bog Trail is ongeveer 4 km lang en eindigt waar hij begint, bij George Lake.
De trail was geweldig en het uitzicht op het Cranberry moeras was adembenemend. Toen we het moeras verlieten hoorden we gekraak in de bossen. Toen we keken wat dit veroorzaakte zag Bart al snel dat het een zwarte beer was en zei dat we door moesten lopen. Toen ik terug keek herkende ik inderdaad een zwarte beer. We hebben dus een zwarte beer gezien... en het overleeft.
De pracht van de trail kan zoals gewoonlijk niet in woorden worden uitgedrukt. Ook hier zullen de foto's het moeten doen.

After the Cranberry Bog Trail, we decided to hike another trail. This time, the choice fell on the Chikanishing Trail as this takes you along the shore of the park and shows great views on the lake. We did not see any strange animals here, but we did spot two foxes before we left the Cranberry Bog area. A very shaken shot of one is shown below.

Na de Cranberry Bog Trail besloten we om nog een trail te hiken. Dit keer viel de keus op de Chikanishing Trail. Dit omdat deze een route heeft rond de kust van het park en dus enorm mooie uitzichten op het meer. We hebben geen onverwachte dieren gezien hier, maar we hebben wel twee vossen gespot voordat we het Cranberry Bog gebied verlieten. Een erg bewogen foto van een van de twee staat hierbeneden.

After this we headed back to the B&B. In the evening I decided to kayak on the lake. It was really nice and the nature is beautiful here. Below a shot of me in the kayak as proof.

Hierna gingen we terug naar de B&B. In de avond heb ik besloten te gaan kayakken op het meer. Het was prachtig en de natuur is hier geweldig. Hieronder een foto van ik in de kayak als bewijs.

Tomorrow the host is taking us on a trip on the lake and in the evening we're going on a boat trip on the French River. Should be good.

Canada 2009 - Whispering Pines on the Bay B&B

Today we headed for our second Bed & Breakfast address, Whispering Pines on the Bay. We left our B&B around 9.15AM in the morning and headed for the ferry at the Harbour of Tobermory. The ferry, Chi-Cheemaun, would take us to South Baymouth. From there we drove for about 3 hours to the new B&B address. The trip was nice and the view was beautiful. However, not everything was so nice and we had some serious rain fall during our trip. Below are some shots of the boat trip and the road towards our new B&B address.

Vandaag zijn we richting ons tweede Bed & Breakfast adres gegaan, Whispering Pines on the Bay. We zijn rond 9:15 bij ons oude B&B adres weg gegaan en zijn toen naar de veerboot in de haven van Tobermory gereden. De veerboot, Chi-Cheemaun, zou ons naar South Baymouth brengen. Vanuit hier hebben we zo'n 3 uur gereden tot we bij ons nieuwe B&B adres waren. De rit was mooi en het uizicht prachtig. We hebben echter ook een aantal stevige regenbuien moeten doorstaan tijdens de rit. Hieronder een aantal foto's van de boottocht en de rit naar ons nieuwe B&B adres.

The new B&B was recommended to us by my parents. They visited this B&B in 2006 and loved the hosts and the location. Thus, we had high expectations... My parents were right. The location is truly marvelous and the hosts are kind and generous. We were greeted with open arms and our room is the best in the house. Below some shots of the location and our room.

Ons nieuwe B&B adres is ons aangeraden door mijn ouders. Zij zijn hier in 2006 ook geweest en waren uitermate tevreden met de gastheer en -vrouw en de locatie van de B&B. Hierom waren onze verwachtingen dan ook hoog... Mijn ouders hebben compleet gelijk. De locatie is kortom geweldig en de gastheer en -vrouw zijn zeer aardig. We werden met open armen ontvangen en onze kamer is de beste van het huis. Hieronder een aantal foto's van de locatie en onze kamer.

Canada 2009 - Fathom Five National Marine Park

Yesterday we had a wonderful breakfast at Setting Sail. After breakfast we headed for Tobermory and the Fathom Five Glass-Bottom boat tour. We decided not to take the tour to the Flowerpot Island, as the weather was quite awful. We went for the 2 hour cruise along the islands on the Great Blue Heron. It was a great cruise and we had a good time. Lake Huron is huge and has quite a lot of islands near Tobermory. These islands are part of the Fathom Five National Marine Park. During the cruise the weather cleared up and we even had a blue sky for a while. This meant that we could’ve taken the tour to Flowerpot Island so we were a bit disappointed. We couldn’t change this anymore, though, so too bad. Below some shots of the cruise around the islands.

Gisteren hebben we een fantastisch ontbijt gehad bij ons B&B adres, Setting Sail. Hierna zijn we richting Tobermory en de Fathom Five Glass-Bottom boot tour gegaan. We besloten, vanwege het slechte weer, dat we niet op Flowerpot Island zouden gaan wandelen. We hebben daarom gekozen voor de 2 uur durende cruise rondom de eilanden, op de Great Blue Heron. Het was een geweldige cruise en we hebben mooie dingen gezien. Lake Huron is gigantisch en er liggen vrij veel eilanden dichtbij Tobermory. Deze eilanden maken deel uit van het Fathom Five National Marine Park. Tijdens de cruise klaarde het weer op en we hebben zelfs een blauwe lucht gezien. Dit hield in dat we toch op Flowerpot Island hadden kunnen wandelen dus we waren wel wat teleurgesteld. Echter dit was niet meer te veranderen, dus jammer maar helaas. After the cruise we headed for the nearest bay where we could hike. The one we picked was Little Cove. Little Cove is a wonderful bay with rocks around the water. There is also a large forest near the bay and we did some hiking there. The path was too obstructed, though, so we quickly decided to walk beside the water instead. This was a nice walk and after a while we headed back. We went to the local supermarket, bought our dinner and headed back. Below some shots of Little Cove.

Na de cruise zijn we richting de dichtstbijzijnde baai gegaan om te hiken. Dit werd Little Cove. Little Cove is een mooie baai met veel rotsen en stenen bij het water. Er ligt ook een groot bos nabij en hier hebben we wat gehiked. Het pad was al snel onbegaanbaar, waardoor we langs het water zijn gaan wandelen. Hier was het zeer mooi en na een tijdje zijn we terug gegaan. We hebben ons avondeten gekocht bij de lokale supermarkt en zijn toen terug gegaan. Hieronder een aantal foto’s van Little Cove.

I also decided to take some new shots of the sunset, as the clouds were less present this time. The photos are less beautiful than the ones taken 2 days ago, though.

Ik heb ook nog besloten om wat nieuwe foto’s van de zonsondergang te nemen, aangezien de wolken minder aanwezig waren dit keer. De foto’s zijn echter wat minder mooi dan de vorige keer.

Today we've got a ferry ride on the Chi-Cheemaun. After we arrive, we're heading for Rock Lake and our second B&B address, Whispering Pines on the Bay.

Canada 2009 - Setting Sail B&B

Today we headed for our first Bed & Breakfast location, Setting Sail in Tobermory. We left Hamilton around 11.30AM and headed for Tobermory. The drive would take us 300 km further into Ontario. It was quite a long drive with an overall speed limit of 80 km/h. We were surprised about the sheer size of the space between houses and farms. Below a couple of shots of the side of the road and the road itself, for those that don't know how large Canada really is.

Vandaag zijn we richting ons eerste Bed & Breakfast adres, Setting Sail te Tobermory, gegaan. We hebben Hamilton rond 11:30 verlaten en zijn richting Tobermory gegaan. The rit zou ons 300 km verder brengen. Het was een vrij lange rit, mede doordat het snelheidslimiet vooral 80 km/h was. We waren verbaasd over de ruimte tussen de huizen en boerderijen. Hieronder een tweetal foto's van de omgeving en de weg, zodat mensen die niet weten hoe groot Canada werkelijk is, een idee krijgen van de grootte.

We also took some shots of the sunset... too bad it wasn't completely over the bay's entrance, but it's nice this way too.

We hebben ook een aantal foto's van de zonsondergang genomen... Helaas was deze niet over de opening van de baai, maar er rechts van. Dit was echter ook nog steeds zeer mooi.

Beautiful location! Tomorrow, if the weather permits, we're heading for Tobermory and the Glass-Bottom boat cruise!

Canada 2009 - Tiffany & Webster Falls

Today we went to visit waterfalls in and near Hamilton. First planned was Tiffany Falls as it was closest. It took a while before we actually found it as no directions were present. Tiffany Falls is quite a nice waterfall, but as it is summer now, most of it is dried up. Below a shot of Tiffany Falls.

Vandaag hebben we nabijgelegen watervallen bezocht. Allereerst wilden we Tiffany Falls bekijken, aangezien deze het dichtst bij is. Het duurde even voor we haar hadden gevonden, omdat de locatie slecht is aangegeven. Tiffany Falls is een mooie waterval, maar doordat het nu zomer is is het meeste water verdampt. After this we headed to Hamilton Downtown to see how that looks. We were suprised by the prices for parking... Some even dared to ask $2.00CAD per half hour! Outrageous. We decided not to go Downtown and headed for Webster Falls. Webster Falls is located in Dundas and is near a park. It's a very nice waterfall, but even better was the trial leading from it down its creek. We walked there for a long time, until we had enough and headed back. Of course I took some shots and they are shown below.

Hierna gingen we richting Hamilton Downtown, om daar eens te kijken hoe het eruit ziet. We waren verrast over de prijzen voor parkeren... Op sommige plaatsen kost parkeren $2.00CAD per half uur. Belachelijk! We besloten daarom dan ook niet in Downtown te blijven en reden richting Webster Falls. Webster Falls ligt in Dundas en is dichtbij een park. Het is een mooie waterval, maar nog mooier is het pad wat vanuit de waterval langs de beek loopt. We hebben hier een tijd gelopen, totdat we er genoeg van hadden. Natuurlijk heb ik er foto's gemaakt en deze staan hier beneden.

After this we were rather tired of walking and headed back to my home. We haven't made any serious plans for tomorrow yet. It will be our last real day in Hamilton. Friday we will head for Tobermory and our first B&B address.

P.S.: The quality of the photo's is less than before, because the weather was cloudy and dark.

Hierna waren we vrij moe van al het lopen en zijn terug naar huis gegaan. We hebben nog geen definitieve plannen voor morgen gemaakt. Morgen is onze laatste volledige dag in Hamilton. Vrijdag gaan we richting Tobermory en ons eerste B&B adres.

P.S.: De kwaliteit van de foto's is minder dan hiervoor, omdat het weer bewolkt en donker was.

I would like to inform everyone that I am not replying to comments on my blog. However, I do appreciate them and do read them. De reden dat ik niet reageer is omdat mijn blog deze optie niet heeft waardoor het vrij lastig is om te reageren. De enige optie zou via e-mail zijn, maar dit is natuurlijk weer zeer tijdverslindend en ik wil hier genieten van al het moois...

Canada 2009 - Formalities + Niagara by Night

Yesterday it was time for me to apply for a Social Insurance Number, open up a bank account and get my hands on a SIM card. Finding the Canada Service Centre, where I would apply for my SIN, was quite difficult. I had to wait in line for a while and then applied for a SIN. All went fine and I received my SIN. This number will allow me to apply for the University Health Insurance Plan, which is a health insurance. After this was done, I bought a Rogers SIM card. Rogers is one of the biggest GSM networks in Canada and the SIM card cost me 45.20$CAD. I haven't activate the card yet, because I need a credit card for that and I want to use my Canadian card for this. After all this, we headed for the Royal Bank of Canada, where I applied for my bank account. After an explanation of the Canadian banking ways, I was set up and ready. I should receive my cards in a few days and the account costs me 4.00$CAD a month. When I was all done with arranging the formalities, we headed for our local shopping mall, bought some groceries and headed home.
We ate dinner and before we left for Niagara, we filled the petrol tanks of our car and were suprised that petrol is so cheap here. We paid 32.00$CAD for 35L of petrol.
We headed towards Niagara Falls around 9PM and arrived around 10PM. I can advice anyone, who visits Ontario, to go see the Falls at night... it's beautiful! Again: Words don't describe this, photo's do.

Het vinden van het Canada Service Centre, waar ik mijn SIN kan aanvragen, bleek vrij moeilijk te zijn. Na een tijdje te hebben gewacht kon ik mijn SIN aanvragen. Ik ontvang mijn bank kaart over een paar dagen en de rekening kost mij 4.00$CAD per maand. Toen alle formaliteiten geregeld waren zijn we richting het lokale winkelcentrum gereden, hebben wat inkopen gedaan en zijn naar huis gegaan.
We hebben gedineerd en voordat we richting Niagara reden hebben we de auto volgetankt. We waren positief verrast over de prijzen hier. We hebben 32.00$CAD betaald voor 35L benzine.
Rond 21:00 zijn we richting Niagara gereden en kwamen hier rond 22:00 aan. Ik kan iedereen, die in Ontario op vakantie gaat, om de Falls bij nacht te bekijken... prachtig! Ook hier geld weer: Woorden kunnen dit niet omschrijven, foto's wel.

After these shots, it was already 0.30AM, so we decided to head back to our car and drive home. Near the Falls, we were greeted by three racoons. That's a good way to end this beautiful trip to Niagara at night!

Na deze foto's was het alweer half een, dus besloten we terug naar de auto te gaan en richting Hamilton te rijden. Bij de watervallen werden we begroet door 3 wasberen. Leuke manier om zo'n mooie reis naar Niagara bij nacht te beëindigen!

Canada 2009 - Toronto

Yesterday we visited the city of Toronto. Toronto is Canada's largest city with about 5 million inhabitants. For us, it was a 45 minute drive to our parking spot near the CN Tower. The CN Tower is Canada's pride and joy, a 553m high communications tower. When we arrived and started heading towards the tower, this is the view we had.

Gisteren hebben we de stad Toronto bezocht. Toronto is de grootste stad van Canada met ongeveer 5 miljoen inwoners. We hebben ongeveer 45 minuten moeten rijden naar onze parkeerplaats dichtbij de CN Tower. De CN Tower is Canada's grootste trots. Het is een 553m hoge communicatie toren. Toen we arriveerden en richting de toren liepen, was dit wat we zagen.

Beautiful! We bought tickets at the counter and were told that we would have to wait in line for at least 30 minutes for the Look Out and Glass Floor decks and about 1 hour for the Sky Pod. We decided to not wait for the lines to shorten and entered the line. When we entered the Look Out deck, we were stunned by the view. It was a very beautiful, sunny day so the view was great. Below is a shot of the amazing view. After absorbing the beauty of the view, we decided to go to the Glass Floor deck. Here one can walk outside the tower and also stand on a glass floor, which shows the height of the tower. Below some shots of us risking our lives on the thin glass.

Prachtig! We hebben vervolgens entreekaarten gekocht en kregen te horen dat we waarschijnlijk een half uur of meer in de wachtrij zouden staan bij de liften naar de Look Out en Glass Floor niveas en ongeveer een uur bij de lift naar de Sky Pod. We besloten niet te wachten tot het rustiger werd en gingen in de rij staan. Zodra we arriveerden bij het Look Out niveau konden we onze ogen niet geloven. Wat een uitzicht! Het weer was zeer goed, veel zon en dus was er ver zicht. Hieronder een foto van wat we daar aantroffen. Na een tijdje naar al het moois te hebben gekeken besloten we richting het Glass Floor niveau te gaan. Hier kan men buiten de toren rondlopen en ook op een glasplaat staan, wat de hoogte van de toren laat zien. Hieronder een paar foto's van hoe we onze levens riskeerden op de dunne glasplaat.

After all that fun, we decided to go up to the Sky Pod. The Sky Pod is the highest observation point in the world, at 447m altitude. This means one can see over every skyscraper in Toronto and, at a clear day, can even see the Skylon Tower at Niagara Falls. We stood in line for a while and then headed up the tower...

Na al dit plezier besloten we naar het Sky Pod niveau te gaan. De Sky Pod is het hoogste observatie punt in de wereld. Op een hoogte van maar liefst 447m kan men over elke wolkenkrabber in Toronto kijken en, op een heldere dag, zelfs de Skylon Tower bij Niagara Falls zien. We hebben een tijdje in de wachtrij gestaan en gingen vervolgens omhoog in de toren...
Mijn god, wat een uitzicht! Ja, we zagen de Skylon Tower bij Niagara Falls en ja het was prachtig! Woorden kunnen dit niet omschrijven, ik laat mijn foto's het woord voeren.

After all this beauty, we decided to have a cup of coffee in the Horizons restaurant. This restaurant is located at the Look Out deck and is extremely expensive. We decided to both have a Cappuccino. The waiter apparently wanted us to also eat some of the expensive food, but we didn't. We had a nice drink and left for Toronto city. We wanted to visit a shopping mall and found one in a book I bought in the Netherlands. It was quite a long walk, but we passed some nice skyscrapers.

Na al dit moois hebben we een kop koffie gedronken in het Horizons restaurant. Dit restaurant bevindt zich op het Look Out niveau en is zeer duur. We hebben allebei een Cappuccino gedronken. De ober was duidelijk niet blij, omdat we geen duur eten hadden besteld. Het was een lekkere bak koffie en daarna verlieten we de CN Tower om Toronto zelf te bezichtigen. We wilden naar een winkelcentrum en vonden er een in een boek wat ik in Nederland heb gekocht. Het was best een lang stuk lopen, maar we kwamen langs een aantal mooie wolkenkrabbers.

Soon we arrived at the shopping mall. It was located in the middle of Toronto Downtown and it was gigantic. We had a lot of fun just checking out prices. Around 5.30PM we decided we left the shopping mall and walked around some more. We visited a photography store so that I could check the price on a telelens that I want to buy... It was cheaper, but still expensive. We also visited our first ever Best Buy store. This is something like a "Kopen, Kopen, Kopen!" (Mediamarkt). After that we decided we were hungry and found a good restaurant in the book I bought. We had to walk quite far for this and it was only to find that the restaurant wasn't there anymore and was now a building site. Disappointed we headed back to town to look for a restaurant. We would settle for almost anything, but we found a really nice restaurant with good service, The Corner Place. We had a great meal and a great dessert. Around 8.30PM we headed for Toronto Harbour, to take some panoramic shots of the skyline. Again, this was only to find that the island was closed to the public after 6PM. We took some shots from a closer point and then drove back to Hamilton. When we were leaving Toronto, I saw a great point to take a night shot of Toronto, so we stopped and took the shot. After that we headed back to Hamilton. Below the shots that I took.

Het winkelcentrum lag in het midden van Toronto Downtown en was gigantisch. We hadden veel plezier met het vergelijken van prijzen t.o.v. Nederland. Rond 17:30 verlieten we het centrum en liepen nog wat rond. We zijn in een fotografie zaak geweest, zodat ik de prijs van een telelens, die ik wil kopen, kon vergelijken... Hij was goedkoper, maar nog steeds duur. We zijn ook in onze allereerste Best Buy winkel ooit geweest. Best Buy is een soort van "Kopen, Kopen, Kopen!" (Mediamarkt). Hierna besloten we dat we honger hadden en vonden een geschikt restaurant in het boek wat ik had gekocht. Het was vrij ver lopen en we kwamen erachter dat het restaurant was vervangen door een bouwput. Moe en teleurgesteld liepen we terug op zoek naar een restaurant. We besloten dat we het eerste restaurant wat we tegenkwamen in zouden gaan. We kwamen terecht bij een zeer leuk restaurant met goede service, The Corner Place. We aten een goede maaltijd en een heerlijk toetje en rond 20:30 gingen we richting Toronto Harbour om wat panorama foto's te maken van de skyline. Ook hier werden we teleurgesteld door een "afgesloten voor het publiek" bord. We hebben wat foto's van de skyline gemaakt vanuit een dichterbij gelegen punt en zijn toen terug naar Hamilton gegaan. Toen we bijna uit Toronto waren zag ik een mooi punt voor een nachtfoto van de Toronto skyline. We zijn gestopt en hebben wat foto's gemaakt. Hierna zijn we terug naar Hamilton gegaan.

Canada 2009 - Niagara Falls

Today we went to Niagara Falls. We decided to go here, because it was a nice way to start our holiday in Ontario. However, first we went for a walk in my "backyard". There is a nice, large forest behind the house I live in and we decided to check it out. Below a shot of how it looks in my backyard. Nice!

Vandaag besloten we naar Niagara Falls te gaan. We hebben dit besloten omdat het ons een zeer leuke start van de vakantie in Ontario leek. Echter, eerst gingen we mijn "achtertuin" bekijken. Achter het huis waarin ik leef bevindt zich namelijk een groot bos en dit wilden we bekijken. Hieronder een foto van hoe het er daar uit ziet. Mooi!

When we were walking around this forest, we saw that clouds were forming and even heard some lightning hitting the ground. This made us decide that we had seen enough and we headed back to my home. We couldn't have decided this at a better time, because as we were almost back, all hell broke loose. We decided to buy food at the local shopping mall for the next few days. In pouring rain we drove to the shopping mall near Dundas and waited for the rain to settle down a bit. We ran through the rain and did our shopping. Afterwards, it was still raining. We drove home, had a delicious breakfast and headed towards Niagara Falls. Since it was still raining, things were looking grim. However, stubborn as we are, we still headed towards the Falls and parked our car. Walking through the rain we were stunned by the sheer size of Niagara Falls. Even in the pouring rain, we took the time to absorb the sheer beauty. We decided to walk towards the Whirlpool, which is a bend in the river that leads to large water rotations. After crossing the first bridge, we decided it was too far to walk and wanted to go back. Then I saw the entrance to the Bird Kingdom. Due to all the rain, we decided to go there, as I love birds. This proved to be a nice park. There were lots of reptiles and birds in there and we had a good time. When we finally left the kingdom, we were delighted to see that the weather was clearing up. Blue skies were already visible over most of Niagara Falls (city), but the Falls themselves were still covered in clouds. This did lead to quite a nice scenic photo, though.

Toen we in het bos rondliepen werden er donkere wolken gevormd en hoorden we in de verte zelfs bliksem inslaan. Hierdoor besloten we terug te gaan naar huis en dat we wel genoeg hadden gezien. Dit hadden we niet later moeten beslissen, want het regende al pijpenstelen toen we bij het huis terugwaren. We moesten nog inkopen doen, dus gingen we naar het lokale winkelcentrum. In de stromende regen reden we hier heen en hebben gewacht tot de regen wat minderde. Vervolgens hebben we door de regen gerend en onze inkopen gedaan. Toen we hier mee klaar waren regende het nog steeds, dus zijn we naar huis gegaan en hebben zeer lekker ontbeten. Vervolgens zijn we richting Niagara Falls vertrokken. Het zag er allemaal niet positief meer uit, aangezien het nog steeds regende. Wij zijn echter eigenwijs en zijn gewoon doorgereden en hebben de auto bij de Falls geparkeerd. Door de regen lopend waren we stom verbaasd over de grootte van de watervallen. Zelfs in de stromende regen namen we de tijd om al het moois te absorberen. We besloten richting de wervelstromen te lopen. Dit is een bocht in de rivier, wat leidt tot grote wervelingen in het water. Voorbij de eerste brug besloten we echter dat dit te ver lopen was en wilden terug gaan. Toen viel mijn oog op de ingang naar het Bird Kingdom. Mede dankzij de stromende regen besloten we hier naar binnen te gaan. Ik ben namelijk dol op vogels. Het bleek een zeer mooi park te zijn, met vele reptielen en vogels. Toen we het koninkrijk eindelijk verlieten, bleek tot onze verbazing dat het weer verbeterd was. Blauwe lucht was al zichtbaar boven Niagara Falls (stad), maar de Falls zelf waren nog steeds bewolkt. Dit leidde echter tot een mooie foto.

To pass the time for the weather to completely clear up, we decided to enter the town of Niagara Falls and see what's what. It proved to be quite a big city, filled with tourist attractions. Truly everything is aimed at pleasing tourists. This leads to a staggering amount of fast-food joints and a lot of attractions. The city itself is therefore not that interesting, but the Canadian culture is. We had a lot of fun comparing our culture with that of the Canadian people. Everything is bigger, some to extreme sizes.
The weather kept clearing up and soon enough the Falls were fully lit by the sun. This lead to a photography madness and we took a lot of photo's. Some are now shown below.

Om de tijd door te komen tot het weer volledig opklaarde, zijn we de stad Niagara Falls ingetrokken om te zien wat daar te doen is. Het is een vrij grote stad, die volledig gevuld is met touristische attracties. Zo ongeveer alles is compleet gericht op het tevreden stellen van touristen. Hierdoor zijn er zeer veel fast-food restauranten en attracties aanwezig. The stad zelf is daarom niet echt interessant, maar de Canadese cultuur is dit zeker wel. We hebben veel plezier beleefd met het vergelijken van onze en de Candadese cultuur. Alles is hier groter, tot aan het belachelijke toe.
Het weer werd steeds beter en al snel warne de Falls volledig belicht door de zon. Hierdoor onstond een soort van fotografie gekte en we hebben dan ook veel foto's genomen. Hieronder een beperkte selectie.

Absolutely beautiful! After taking several dozen shots of the Falls, we decided we wanted to dine in the Skylon Tower. However, the prices here were so high, we decided not to dine here, but somewhere else. We did go up to the Observation Deck to have a panoramic view of Niagara Falls. This was a good decision as it was beautiful up there. The Observation Deck gives you a full view of the sheer size of the city of Niagara Falls. Canadian towns are quite different from Dutch towns, as there is more than enough room to fit any building. Here are some shots of how it looks from up there.

Geweldig mooi! Nadat we enkele tientallen foto's van de Falls hadden genomen hebben we besloten te gaan dineren in de Skylon Tower. De prijzen hier waren echter zo belachelijk hoog, dat we besloten dit niet te doen. We zijn echter wel naar het Observation Deck gegaan zodat we een panoramisch uitzicht over Niagara Falls zouden hebben. Dit was een zeer goede beslissing, aangezien het hier geweldig was. Het Observation Deck geeft je een volledig overzicht van de uitgestrektheid van de stad Niagara Falls. Canadese steden zijn zeer verschillend van Nederlandse steden, aangezien er hier meer dan genoeg ruimte is voor alle gebouwen. Hier zijn wat foto's van hoe het hierboven eruit ziet.

After the Observation Deck we headed to the nearest Burger King and ate our dinner. When we were done, we left for the car. After picking up the umbrella I forgot at the Burger King, we walked back. We decided that we would drive to the Whirlpool and Power Station and then head back to Hamilton. We were both very tired of walking all day long and decided it was best to leave Niagara Falls at night for a later time. We drove to the Whirlpools and the Power Station, took some photo's and called it a day. We arrived back in Hamilton just before 9PM.

Na het Observation Deck te hebben bezichtigd zijn we naar de dichtstbijzijnde Burger King gegaan en hebben daar gedineerd. Eenmaal klaar zijn we richting de auto gelopen. Na de paraplu, die ik was vergeten, te hebben opgehaald bij de Burger King gingen we terug. We besloten nog naar de Whirlpool en de krachtcentrale te rijden en daarna terug naar Hamilton te gaan. We waren allebei moe van een dag lopen en besloten de Niagara Falls in de avond tot later te bewaren. We reden naar de Whirlpool en de krachtcentrale, namen wat foto's en reden terug. Rond 21:00 waren we terug in Hamilton.

Yesterday, around 10.30PM Dutch time I put my luggage in the car and drove to my cousin, Bart. There we picked him and his luggage up and drove to Schiphol International Airport. There we (me, Bart and my parents) walked towards our check-in desk and then decided we would share a coffee at Starbucks before my parents went back to Helmond. I had a Latte Macciato and it was very nice. Me and Bart decided we would sit down at a table and wait for the desk to open. Around 5AM the desk opened and we entered the waiting line. Around 5.30 we were all checked in and ready for lift-off. We walked around the tax-free shops and then headed towards our gate, B13. There we saw our first airplane, an Airbus A320 from the Lufthansa company.

Gisteren rond 22:30 Nederlandse tijd heb ik mijn baggage in de auto gelegd en riching mijn neef, Bart, gereden. Daar hebben we hem en zijn baggage opgepikt en zijn naar Schiphol International Airport gereden. Eenmaal aangekomen zijn ik, Bart en mijn ouders richting onze check-in balie gelopen en hebben toen beslist nog even een kopje koffie bij Starbucks te drinken alvorens mijn ouders terug naar Helmond reden. Ik heb hier een Latte Macciato gedronken en dat smaakte zeker. Bart en ik hadden vervolgens besloten bij een tafel te gaan zitten en te wachten tot de balie open ging. Rond 5:00 's morgens ging de balie open en gingen we in de rijd staan. Rond 5:30 waren we ingecheckt en klaar voor vertrek. We hebben wat tax-free winkels bekeken en zijn toen richting onze gate, B13, gegaan. Hier zagen we voor het eerst ons vliegtuig, een Airbus A320 van Lufthansa.

This was my first ever plane flight, so it was rather exciting. Lift-off and landing are cool, ascend and descent are rather annoying, as your ears keep wanting to pop out. All-in-all the experience was good, although the plane was a bit outdated. The flight took only 45 minutes, so that was no problem. After we arrived at Frankfurt International Airport, we headed towards our next flight gate, B47 at Terminal 1. Once there, we didn't see an airplane at all. We boarded the plane via a bus drive around 10.15AM. The airplane was a Boeing 777 from Air Canada. The flight somehow got delayed, due to internal air conditioning problems and we had lift-off around 11.30AM. This time, I did use my camera (or rather Bart did, as he was next to the window) to take some nice shots.

Dit was mijn allereerste rit in een vliegtuig ooit, dus het was vrij spannend. Opstijgen en landen zijn leuk, maar het stijgen en dalen zijn niet al te aangenaam, aangezien je oren willen barsten. Al met al was het zeker een leuke ervaring, maar het vliegtuig was vrij oud. De vlucht heeft slechts 45 minuten geduurd, waardoor dit geen enkel probleem was. Nadat we op Frankfurt International Airport waren geland, gingen we richting onze nieuwe vlucht-gate, B47 op Terminal 1. Toen we daar arriveerden zagen we geen vliegtuig staan. We zijn aan boord gegaan via een bus rit rond 10:15. Het vliegtuig was een Boeing 777 van Air Canada. De vlucht werd wat vertraagd door een probleem met de air conditioning en we stegen rond 11:30 op. Deze keer heb ik (naja, eigenlijk vooral Bart, aangezien hij bij het raam zat) de tijd genomen om wat mooie plaatjes te schieten.

So now we were at Toronto Pearson International Airport and had a lot of things to arrange. First, we had to go through customs. Not a tough thing to do if you're a tourist, but for me it was somewhat more complicated as I had to obtain my Work Permit. I was directed to the Immigration Office by the customs officer. There I had to explain what I was going to do in Canada, tell them I had everything arranged and prove it. All went fine, although I was a bit nervous. I received my Work Permit and was thus allowed to enter Canada.
Secondly we had to get our luggage. This seems trivial, but since we had to board two planes, it's always a tense moment to find out if the bags were succesfully transferred. Well, they were, so all was fine. I then found a callphone and used it to call my Land lord in Hamilton to let him know we were on our way.
Next, Bart had to pick up the car we rented. We rented a medium sized car and were happy to hear that we were allowed to pick any of the parked medium sized car. There were a lot of hidious cars, but also a Pontiac Vibe station. We chose that one and started heading towards my room in Hamilton. All went fine for a while, until we hit high tide in Toronto. All the way to Hamilton we were in traffic jams and lost a lot of good time here. We arrived at my room around 5PM local time (GMT-5). The land lord was really kind and so was the other student living in the house. Now some (crappy quality) shots of my room. The quality is low, because I'm tired and forcing myself to stay up until at least 10PM, so that I can get in the normal rythm. The room might look small, but there is also a living room, kitchen and bathroom present. The part shown is thus only my "private area".

Nu waren we dus geland op Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) en hadden nog zeer veel dingen te regelen.
Allereerst moesten we door de Douane. Dit is voor een tourist niet moeilijk, maar voor mij is wat complexer. Ik moest namelijk mijn werkvergunning nog ontvangen. Ik werd door de Douanebeamte doorgestuurd naar de Immigratie Dienst. Hier moest ik vertellen wat ik van plan was in Canada en aantonen dat ik alles geregeld had. Alles ging goed, al was ik wat zenuwachtig. Ik heb mijn werkvergunning ontvangen en had dus toestemming Canada binnen te gaan.
Vervolgens moesten we onze baggage ophalen. Dit lijkt allemaal vanzelfsprekend, maar doordat we hebben moeten overstappen is het toch altijd even spannend om te zien of alles is goed gegaan. Dit was het geval. Vervolgens heb ik met een betaaltelefoon naar mijn huisbaas gebeld om door te geven dat we onderweg waren.
Bart moest daarna de huurauto op gaan halen. We hadden een normale grootte auto gehuurd en waren positief verrast toen we te horen gekregen dat we een auto mochten uitkiezen. Aangezien er niet veel mooie auto's waren zijn we gesettled met een Pontiac Vibe station. We hebben deze gehuurd en zijn richting Hamilton vertrokken. Alles ging goed aan het begin, maar op een gegeven moment zijn we in de spits van Toronto terecht gekomen en hier pas net voor Hamilton weer uitgekomen. Hier hebben we dus veel tijd verloren. Rond 17:00 (Canada tijd, GMT-5) kwamen we aan bij mijn kamer. De huurbaas blijkt zeer aardig te zijn en de andere student, die ook hier woont, ook. Hieronder wat foto's van het huis en mijn kamer. De kwaliteit is belabberd door mijn gebrek aan slaap en dat ik van mijzelf eis dat ik niet voor 22:00 naar bed ga, zodat ik in het normale ritme kan komen. De kamer ziet er misschien wat klein uit, maar er is een woonruimte, keuken en toiletruimte met bad aanwezig. Dit is dus slechts mijn "prive-gedeelte".

Tomorrow we might head for Niagara Falls, but nothing's sure as of yet.

Morgen gaan we misschien naar de Niagara watervallen, maar dat is nog allesbehalve zeker.

Canada 2009 - Departure imminent

Oh yes, in about 2 hours I will leave for Schiphol Airport (AMS). My parents and I will pick up my cousin, Bart, and then arrive at Schiphol around 1AM. At 4.15AM we can check-in and prepare for our flight. Can't wait!
Around 7PM (GMT+2) and 1PM Toronto time I will land at Toronto Pearson (YYZ), where I will try to obtain my Work Permit and then we will go fetch our car and drive to my room in Hamilton, ON. I will then finish my day of about 40 hours (or more) and see if my room is any good, sign the lease and rest.
More adventures, now from Canada, will be written here after this post. This is my last post from Dutch soil for this year.

Eindelijk, over ongeveer 2 uur vertrek ik richting Schiphol. Mijn ouders en ik halen eerst mijn neef, Bart, en zullen rond 1 uur 's nachts op Schiphol arriveren. Vanaf 4:15 kunnen we inchecken en ons op de vlucht voorbereiden. Ik heb er nu al zin in!
Rond 19:00 onze tijd en 13:00 Canada tijd zal ik op Toronto Pearson (YYZ) landen. Ik zal dan eerst mijn werkvergunning ophalen en daarna halen we onze gehuurde auto op en rijden we naar mijn kamer in Hamilton, Ontario. Zodra we daar arriveren zal ik de kamer inspecteren en het huurcontract tekenen. Daarna gaan we waarschijnlijk rusten, want we hebben dan al een dag van 40 uur (of meer) achter de rug.
Vanaf nu zullen mijn avonturen geplaatst worden vanuit Canada. Dit is dan ook mijn laatse bericht vanaf Nederlands grondgebied wat ik dit jaar zal plaatsen.

Starting with this post, I will have two versions of my blog posts. One will be in the standard English language, the other will be in Dutch. As some of you might know, I originally decided to write my blog in English to enhance my grasp on the English language. However, for my internship to Canada I expect more people to read my blog that are less familiar with the English language as I am. To suit their needs I will write my blog in Dutch as well. Note that this only applies to blog posts about my internship on the McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. The Dutch part will be below the English part, written in italic style.

Vanaf dit bericht zal ik twee versies van mijn blog berichten plaatsen. Een hiervan is in mijn standaard Engelse taal, de andere is in het Nederlands. Zoals sommigen van jullie waarschijnlijk weten ben ik begonnen met het schrijven in het Engels om mijn Engels taalgebruik te verbeteren. Echter, nu ik naar Canada vertrek voor mijn stage, verwacht ik dat er meer mensen mijn blog lezen, die minder bekend zijn met de Engelse taal dan ikzelf. Ter gemoetkoming zal ik dus voortaan ook in het Nederlands schrijven. Let op: dit is alleen voor berichten over mijn stage op de McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. Het Nederlandse deel van mijn blog zal schuingedrukt onder het Engelse deel staan. Alvast mijn excuses voor het hakkelend Nederlands (of Engels), het is niet makkelijk om twee talen onder elkaar te plaatsen zonder invloeden van beide te ondervinden.

Only 25 days left!

I've started to prepare my suitcase now the date is getting closer. I've bought some of those handy vacuum sealing bags and they are a delight. Since the room I rented doesn't come fully equipped I decided to bring as many useful things as possible with me. I will bring towels and possibly even a bed spread, if weight and room allows.
This saves me money, since I won't have to buy it in Canada and be force to leave it behind when I go back to the Netherlands. Some call me crazy for trying to do this, but hey, I'm Dutch!

The date is getting close, so I've also made an appointment with my internship project leader. I will meet him for the first time on August 3rd at 10:00AM at the McMaster University. Can't wait!

Canada 2009 - Room Rental

Good news!
My room rental is finally complete. After a month of searching for a decent room in Hamilton, I finally found one. I had to wire the first and last months rent to the land lord and that was more difficult that I anticipated.
In Canada they're used to wire money via bank draft. Which is a cheque, where the receiver fills in his bank account information and then submits it to the bank for wiring of the money. Here in the Netherlands this is not common at all. This lead to some difficulties, but I could solve it by doing the normal Dutch method of wiring electronically via my bank.
It took a week to arrive, but yesterday it arrived and I received the signed Lease Agreement from my land lord. My room is finally rented for my period of stay in Canada. Yippee!

Now all that remains, as far as I know, is fly to Canada and have a good time!

Canada 2009 - Work Permit update

Work Permit Approved!

Oh yes! It’s approved. I’m allowed to travel to Canada. Now you should know that this is not the definitive permission to enter and work in Canada. This will be issued once I pass through customs…

I’m happy that I finally got the approval, since now only finding a room remains. I’ve started sending out e-mails to possible land lords some weeks ago and the replies are finally starting to arrive. I’m sure I’ll find a good quality room for the 6 months in beautiful Canada.

Canada 2009 - Work permit sent

Finally, I have gathered all the documents required to apply for the Young Workers’ Exchange Program (NL), so I have finally been able to send the forms in a big envelope to the Canadian Embassy in Berlin (Germany).

I sure hope that I did everything correctly, because I really can’t afford more weeks of delay, as the program has a maximum number of applicants each year. I sure hope I applied in time (most likely I did, but I’m a magnet for bad luck). We shall see, only time can tell.

I have started to look for housing as well. The McMaster University has a nice off-site link to housing and I will start sending out e-mails within a couple of weeks, I guess. I don’t want to book a room before I have my Work Permit, but I need to start informing about the details sooner than later.

So all is well sofar, but a lot depends on that one particular application…. the Work Permit.

Canada 2009 - Flights booked!

Oh yes, I finally booked my flights.

I will be flying from Amsterdam Schiphol AMS to Frankfurt at 07:15AM on the 10th of July, 2009. From there I will fly to Toronto Pearson YYZ at 10:45AM. I will then arrive in beautiful Canada around 01:00PM.

My return flight is at the 8th of Januari, 2010 and I will fly via London Heathrow. I will leave at 06:10PM Canada local time and arrive at 08:15AM Dutch time the next morning.

So I will be gone for 5 months and 30 days. 1 day short of 6 months, so I don’t have to go through all the annoying 6-month stay checks.

Me and my cousin have also rented a car for 21 days for the holiday in July. This is expensive, but it beats going by train.

New toy has arrived!

The day has finally come that I can replace my trusty old Kyocera Finecam M410r. It has been a great camera for 4 years now and it still is… However, I want more from my photo’s nowadays, so it was time I replaced it.

I have replaced it by the following:

Canada 2009 - The revised plan

Oh yes, I have had to change almost every plan I had for my internship to Canada this summer.

First of all, I received a letter of the McMaster University, where I am invited as a visiting student this summer. However, what came as a surprise to me is that they invited me to do a project for them from August 1, 2009 until December 24, 2009. This came as a surprise, because (for those that can’t count) this is for 5 months… not the 3 that I was planning on. I don’t mind this at all, in fact, I’m happy about this. This gives me an even better chance to learn Canada from a citizen point of view.

However, my holiday plans with my sister are now gone. I cannot go on a holiday in November, because I will still be working on my project at that time. So I had to disappoint my sister, because there is no way that I’m going to go to New York in January 2010, because it will be too cold at that time. She wasn’t happy, but could understand that I chose the project over the holiday.

The other holiday, the one with my cousin, isn’t sure yet either. Sofar my cousin doesn’t know if he even has that time off from his normal job, so that’s what it mostly depends on. Other than that, I will need to arrange a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and a Canadian bank account in the first few weeks of my stay in Canada. I prefer doing this before I start my project, as this speeds up the official documents when I start. This means that a holiday could prove difficult and that I might need to skip the entire idea of a holiday before I start… This wouldn’t make me that happy, but I would have peace with it if it means that I can start my project with all documents in order…. in stead of having to hurry and fill everything in on the first day.

So yeah… all my previous posts are kinda useless now, but hey the planning was fun to do

I will update this blog with more information as time progresses, as I am now really starting to get somewhere with my internship.

Canada 2009 - The holidays

This is just a sketch of my plans, nothing too certain yet.

I will go on two holiday trips, one with my cousin, one with my sister. With my cousin I will visit Ontario, Canada and with my sister I will visit the US of A. Here are two temperorary maps of what I intend to visit. These maps might change any time, since it’s all just a plan.

Oh yes, it’s still going to happen. I’ve managed to arrange a couple of things and get more details on what I plan to do when I arrive in Canada. Here are the basic plans:

3 weeks holiday prior to my internship
3 months internship at the McMaster University in Hamilton (ON)
2 weeks post-internship time

I will leave somewhere in the week of 6 July with my cousin for a 3 weeks holiday in Ontario. We will visit places like Niagara Falls, Allonquin National Park, Ottawa, Toronto, CN Tower (Toronto), Flowerpot Islands and much, much more. The exact details will be posted later, once me and my cousin have actually planned it all. It will be one heck of a good time, touring around Ontario.

The internship is a bit more “boring”. I will do an awesome project at the McMaster University in Hamilton (ON). The location can be found via maps.google.com. I will do a project in the department of Material Science and Engineering. I will not give details about the project, because it is confidential, but let’s just say it’s going to be legendary… (Barney ftw! (How I Met Your Mother, watch it!)).

When I am doing the project, I won’t just stay in my room in the weekends and evenings of course. I will make the 4 months I have in Canada the best ever!

After my internship should end (in the beginning of November) I will stay another 2 or 3 weeks, to be able to finish my internship if something goes wrong with the planning.

Well, that’s about as much as the plans are right now.

Zoo's should be banned

I still feel sad inside from what I saw at Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen last sunday. I went there with my cousins of my mom’s side of the family and what I saw there broke my heart.

I saw cages so tiny that animals could barely turn around and animals so psychologically destroyed that they didn’t know what to do with themselves. It deeply hurt me to see some of the most majestic animals the earth has kept in cages. I saw a White-tailed Eagle kept in a cage that barely allowed this majestic bird of prey to flap his wings, let alone fly. I saw a Polar Bear so destroyed inside that all he did was walk in circles, bashing his head to the wall.

I know that some zoo’s only exist because the animals kept there were found seriously wounded and that could not go back to the wild. However, a life in a zoo, where all you can do is stare at the crowd that stares back… that’s just horrible.

I went to the zoo for one reason: to be with my family, but even that could not cheer me up. True, I had a great time overall, but the feeling that zoo left me is not easily forgotten. Zoo’s should be banned. If it were for me, I’d rather die of an injury or die in the wild, trying to survive, than to be stuck in a cage where I can’t even do what I’m supposed to do: live free.

I will never go to a zoo again, since nothing can take a way the feeling that a zoo leaves me with. Family or not, I won’t go there again. I won’t make the same mistake twice.

Plans for '09

Well, here’s a list of things I have planned for the year 2009. You could consider this as a “good deed” list, but nah, it kinda aint. Most of the things planned are just things I need to do, or do to get money. Here we go:

Paradox Reprogram project:

Allow me to elaborate, since most of you won’t know what Paradox is or why it needs reprogramming. Paradox is a program that runs inside of MATlab. It allows the user to do complex calculations with vectors and tensors. This allows the user to use it for things like Finite Element Method (FEM) or other things. This is very useful within my researchgroup, as we work with FEM all the time. There are, however, a couple of serious downsides to the use of Paradox. For example, the program causes a memory leak within MATlab, which eventually leads to a full RAM and thus an extremely slow computer as a result. This is the biggest problem Paradox has, but other malfunctions like not beeing able to use the data anywhere else, or even add a legend to a plot are also known problems. Thus, the program needs to go away and a replacement should be created.

Thus one of my teachers decided it was time to hire two students to do this work for them, since they simple don’t have the time in my research group. I am one of those students. I will work 8 hours a week to design and develop a program within MATlab, that works better than Paradox. This is a payed project.

Experimental work for the Polymer Mechanics project:

I recently finished a subject called “Polymer Mechanics”. This subject was basically one big project of 80ish hours per student and was finished by a presentation. However, due to unexpected complications with my group’s project (creating a setup to measure crack propagation in PolyCarbonate) we didn’t do as many experiments as we hoped we would. The associate professor of the Polymer Technology section decided to hire our group to do more experiments and develop the setup further. I don’t know the amount of hours I will spent on this yet, since we’re waiting for the PC samples to arrive. Once these arrive, the associate professor will contact us for further information. This too will be a payed project.

Free Space project:

For my Master’s degree I have to do something in my so-called “Free Space”. This can either be 3 more subjects (heck no!) or a project. I chose a lab-assignment (project). I have chosen a project involving NanoFlex (material used in shavers) and will start on this project in a couple of weeks. It’s an experimental project, where I have to do a lot of labwork. I chose this because I need experimental skills if I wish to become a good engineer later on. I have to spent approximately 250ish hours on this project and I chose to spread it out over a semester. I will spent around 8 to 12 hours a week minimum on this project. This is clearly an unpayed project.

Finish my subjects:

I have finished 5 subjects sofar (8.8 average grade, woohoo, go me!) and have yet to finish 7 more. I will start 4 subjects this semester and still have to finish the assignments of 2 other subjects that I already took (lectures are finished anyway). This shouldn’t be too much of a hassle, as I am good at studying.

Like last year, I will help people with these subjects (well, only Metals last year, FEM is new). This is a lot of fun, I learn a lot from it and I get payed… What else?

Obtain a dSLR:

I am planning to buy a Canon 450D (or an other model) this year. I have been wanting a new camera for a while now, as my old Kyocera Finecam M410r is starting to die on me. I want to buy a dSLR now, because the quality is just a lot better and they cost as much as my Kyocera did when I bought that one. I want to buy this camera before my visit to Canada.

Internship to Canada:

This shouldn’t be new to you, as I have made several posts about this already. I am currently planning an internship of 3 months to the McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. This will be a dream come true, as I wanted to go to Canada for a long time now. Planning is only in the first phase, but I hope to really get going soon. The internship should be from August till November ‘09. I also hope to be able to plan a 2 weeks holiday in Canada with my cousin, Bart, before I start my internship. Fingers crosses that my finance allows it.

Decide what Master Project I’ll do:

After I come back from my internship of 3 months, I will have to start my Final Project to receive my MSc. degree. This is a 1 year project and I will start as soon as I can after I come back. Should be a lot of fun.

That’s about it, small list of things I plan to do, but hey, they’re all big projects.

Canada 2009 - Brain Storm

Oh yes, I’m still working on arranging my internship to Canada. All is looking good sofar.

I have established contact with three professors, namely David Embury, Hatem Zurob and Peidong Wu. David is on a holiday right now, but he is my main contact as far as I know. Today I sent out a mail to Peidong requesting what projects are available and if I’m able to start my internship in the beginning of august ‘09. Of course due to holidays he has not replied yet, but I’m sure he will as soon as possible.

The idea for my internship is as follows right now: I have decided to take a 1, 2 or 3 week holiday before I start my internship, which means I won’t start untill august. I have decided this, since my cousin was planning a holiday to Canada aswell and then to meet up with me for a weekend while I’m already doing my internship. I suggested “why not go on a holiday together?”. This is now the idea. Me and my cousin, Bart, will go on a “insert amount of weeks my finance allows” week holiday before I start my internship.

As soon as I know how much my lodging, travelling and the rest costs, we can start organizing this trip.

The holidays are coming. Time to start buying gifts for your close ones! I myself am finishing the subjects that I am taking right now. This will be a very busy week, with a lot of days from 8AM till 8PM. Oh well, it’s worth it in the end.

I just want to wish every reader I have here (scarce set of people, I know) happy holidays and a good time with your family. I’m not into the whole religious thing, but I do like the rare family time. So have fun all!

Canada 2009 - First E-mail conversation

Today I decided where my internship would go if it were up to me. I chose the McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada, of course). So I e-mailed my professor (Marc Geers) and he e-mailed the professor I would be working with in Canada. I didn’t expect an early reply, but I got a quick reply this evening.

They’re delighted to have me there and are offering some very exciting projects. I will receive information about them later this week and I will have a hard time choosing I think. But the first contact has been made and I’m very excited about what I’m going to do. Apparently it might involve working with a TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope)!.

Canada 2009 - First meeting

Today I had my first meeting with my professor, Prof. Dr. Ir. Geers (Marc). I had an appointment to discuss the first details about a possible internship to Canada in the summer of 2009. We talked about how my study is progressing, and to no suprise, it’s all going fine.

I have heard a couple of places where it’s possible to get an internship. In other words, places where my professor has connections. I’m going to check out some of the companies and even universities to see if I can find something I like.

Possible places that he advised me are the McMaster University near Lake Ontario and a company called Novelis Global Technology Organization, in Kingston.

Like I said, I’m going to investigate what they have to offer me first, before I make any discussions, but it sure looks good for now. So it’s time for me to really start organizing my internship now… exciting times.

My notebook owns

Yes, you read it correctly: my notebook owns. Disagree? Go eat your mom!

It’s small, it’s fast, it’s awesome, it’s small, it looks awesome, it’s fast, did I mention it was small?

To summarize the awesomeness of my notebook, I have compiled a comparison between my old Nec Versa P550 and my new Samsung Q210-AS04:

Well I think that says it all… I could not be more happy with my new notebook. It’s all what I expect and more. Of course things are bound to change in the future. I run Windows on the machine, so it’s bound to go downhill soonder than later, but hey, let’s enjoy the moment.

Some might say it’s small, well I say size does matter! A small notebook is not a disadvantage, it works like any other notebook, just some keys are harder to find (under FN for example). But that just takes time to get used to. Whenever I see my notebook standing in between some of it’s bigger (crappy) brothers like the NECs, I just know I made the right decision going for a 12.1″.

Anyone who is currently looking for a new notebook: Go Samsung or IBM. Don’t bother going with a crappy brand like NEC. It might be cheaper (even though mine cost €2000,=), it will be expensive on the long run. I have had 2 broken DVD-players, 1 broken charger and 2 broken motherboards in the timespan of 3 years. Don’t buy NEC!

Falconry Workshop

Today I had one of the best and most awesome experiences in my life. My sister (and parents) gave me a workshop with birds of prey for my birthday. Today was the day of the workshop (my birthday was the 28th of September). I was excited and even a bit worried. Flying with birds of prey (as in hunting with, etc) has been one of my child dreams and today I was going to put it to the test. So it was exciting but I knew I would have an awesome day nonetheless.

So when I arrived (2 hours drive from my house) it was raining outside… I was in for a bad day of rain, but that would not spoil the fun! After a small introduction to the history of falconry (it’s a 3000 year old profession), it was time for us to meet the birds. The falconry has tons of birds of prey, ranging from small falcons to owls and eagles. They even have 2 pelicans (wow they are big). I was not alone during all of this, of course. The group had 26 people in it and all had one thing in common: We all loved birds of prey. After a small tour around the facility they told us it was time for us to put a bird in our hand. Wow, this is what I came for. They handed out 5 gloves for us to hold the birds on and told us we were supposed to swap birds from time to time (damn I wanted them for myself! Egoistic others wanting to hold the birds aswell, pfff!). I was the lucky one in the first run, I got to hold the Red Tail Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) (by far the most beautifull bird of prey from the 5 we got to hold in our hands). It was raining outside and there was quite a lot of wind. This lead to Yvonne, Iris or Nina (don’t know which one they picked for today) decided to put her wings into the wind and just relax. Just wow, look at it… Such an incredible bird. I just stood there, looking at it for like 5 minutes before I handed it over. I couldn’t get enough of the bird. They’re such stunning creatures. I took some more photo’s of her and this one is the best of her alone (look at the raindrops on her feathers):

After staring at her for a while longer, I decided it was time to move on. I went to check out the Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo). I never was into owls that much, but oh my God, they look so damn beautifull from up close. Just look at him (Joep or Jaap, again don’t know):

Don’t mind the red eyes, it’s because the flash is overkill on those huge eyes. Such a beautifull creature aswell. I didn’t put him on my hands yet, because I was stunned by the view of the Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus). Again, oh my God, what an awesome creature:

By the time I was holding this young Harris Hawk, the rain had become worse and worse. It was literally pouring outside (see my coat) and the organization decided it was time to move us inside. After I had given “back” the young Harris Hawk, I found it was time to actually hold the Bubo bubo (awesome name there):

Dang that bird was heavy. Well actually a lot ligher than one might expect for a creature that size, it only weighs about 2.5kg, but after holding birds for a while, your arm becomes sore. So I quickly switched birds again. This time it was time for another owl, an awesome owl of which I can’t remember the type of owl. It was a young owl, they didn’t have it for too long yet, and it was squeecking like its life depended on it. It was a nice looking owl however, so I loved it:

Owls are funny. Ok, it was getting time to head back to the starting building to get an introduction to some types of birds, but first I just had to hold the Red Tail Hawk again, I loved it so much:

Now it was time for a little introduction to the life of owls, how they life, how they hunt, etcetera. I took a few photo’s, but none were really awesome or interesting enough, because after the introduction of the Eurasian Eagle Owl, it was time for the…. BALD EAGLE! Oh yes, even with pouring rain, Julius was brought in, pissed off and awesome. The next few photo’s are of him and how awesome he is. My all time favorite bird of prey, the bald eagle:

I need a vacation

I’m so sick and tired of studying theory from books. I think 9 years of reading books to learn theory is more than enough. It’s time for me to put the stuff I have learned in the past 9 years of school in practise. 1 more year of studying theory for subjects remains and then it should finally be done.

Luckily this year I also start with subjects that don’t end in a painfull test at the end. Some end with an oral exam (not that bad, considering it’s just talking about an exercise I made), some end with a presentation and some simply end by a final report. It’s better, but there are still subjects left that force you to read hundreds of pages of boring theory without any practical experiments to make good use of the theory. I will give one example:

Fracture Mechanics

UGH. The subject sounds interesting and believe me it really, really is. It’s the study of how cracks grow within a structure and when the structure will actually fracture under the load. Sounds interesting enough for me. Hell, I really enjoyed the first few lectures, it was interesting and refreshing. Fracture Mechanics is not even close to being a completely formulated area of material science. It’s still in it’s beginning phase and a lot of research is still done in determining certain relationships between cracks and other properties. Non-linearity is a big problem in material science and the area of Fracture Mechanics is no exception. Lots of errors are made in the current predictions about crack propagation and research is trying its best to come up with solutions. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

However, somehow this subject got screwed up and ended up being a subject without any experiments, examples, exercises or whatsoever. Yes, of course the standard Marc/Mentat examples are shown during the lectures, but most of it is just simple theory and we don’t get to do anything ourselves besides running the already existing .proc files and altering some of the properties/geometries. Also the teacher has told us to go to the library to find certain books, read several chapters and then make sure you understand the chapters, because some of it is examinated. The main reason for this: He wants us to visit the library and see the sheer amount of literature available to us (This I find a good idea, really, but blah, even more reading). The subject is examinated by a multiple choice test (are we idiots or something? Multiple choice is for idiots!). The teacher even admits that the test is easy as pie and that some questions are not even important to know in the end. He will ask for certain formulas, but he also admits that we will probably only know these formulas by head during this test. He admits that 5 minutes later, we will have forgotten what the formula was. Then why even ask the damn formula? I have no idea. I don’t like this at all and I could rant on about this for a lot longer than I just did, but this is enough.

There are more reasons to why I’m fed up with studying from books. Yes, theory is very important, but come on, I need at least some practical experiments in my study. All that we have done so far is very limited, even though some experiments were good and great fun. I loved working on my Bachelor Final Project so much, that I think I’m just missing doing projects right now. Currently all I’m doing is taking subjects and just hoping that some of the subjects let me do practical or numerical work.

Now this might seem like a big negative point of my study, but don’t get me wrong. I love Mechanical Engineering and I love Mechanics of Materials even more. I wouldn’t switch it in a million years for a completely practical study. Theory is important, but sometimes I just am completely fed up with my nonstop routine of studying, studying, studying and even more studying. Get my point?

Bah, when reading this I sound so negative. I love my current study and there are a lot of awesome subjects that I’m currently taking, like Damage Mechanics and Non-Linear Finite Element Method for Solids. Those subjects also have a lot of theory to back up the exercises, but hey, at least there are exercises. I think the badly organized subjects are just getting to my head.

The solution?

I need a vacation… Canada, here I come!

Tempus Fugit

Tempus fugit is perhaps the most true saying ever thought up by mankind. Definitely from my point of view. It simply astounds me how fast time has passed since I first started at the Dr.-Knippenbergcollege back in 1999.

Tempus fugit indeed. I can still remember the first day I cycled to the “Knip”. Small and shy as I was, I sat down in front of the teacher and didn’t open my mouth. A lot has changed since that day. My 2 best friends come from my time at the Knip. Joris (jrrzz.net) and Bjorn. I met Bjorn somewhere in my first year during a “Levensbeschouwing” course. Joris entered our small circle of friendship lateron, in the fourth year. We never met the guy before then, because he was in a different class. We became close friends and still are up to today. Sometimes I miss the times I had with them, it was great fun. I can honestly say that it was one of the best times in my life up till now. But then again, tempus fugit and time spent cannot be retrieved. Memories are all that remains.

Not that I would go back when I had the chance, my life right now is good and I wouldn’t want to go through 6 years of high school again. University is good to me and I’m still good friends with Bjorn and Joris. Nowadays we all have filled schedules and it’s hard to find times to gather and have some good ol’ fun, but hey, at least we still are friends.

Tempus fugit even more at the university. Three whole years have flown by and I barely realize how fast it has went by. Sometimes I look back and all the time I’m astounded by the sheer velocity of time. Even this year is flying by. I’m already nearing my second test week and I barely realize that the holidays are over…

Time is flying by so fast that my internship to Canada (2009) is closing in rather fast. I have to start planning it soon or I will run in to problems on the long term. I hope time slows down without it becoming boring when I’m actually in Canada.

I think you get the picture. Tempus Fugit is one of the best quotes in history. It’s true for almost everyone who actually thinks about the time flying by. Sometimes I wish time didn’t fly by so fast, but then I realize that the only way it doesn’t fly by fast, is when I’m bored. I don’t want to be bored, even though I sometimes am. As long as time flies, I’m having fun. Therefore: I love Tempus Fugit. It’s my most favorite quote.

Bachelor’s ceremony

Woo! Finally I have officially received my Bachelor’s degree! Cum Laude! The ceremony was nicely done, I was in a suit, do I need to say more? It’s nice that I finally had a moment in time where my work at the university is appreciated. Most of the time it’s just work, work and more work. So it’s nice to see the results.

Canada 2009 - the idea

The internship is a required part of my study and allows me to go to another country. My plans are to visit Canada for 3 - 4 months. 3 months is the time that stands for the internship, but of course I want to add a small/big holiday after it.

Here’s a special blogpost from me. Just recently the ACP has started a social activity, called a meme. Basically it asks its members to answer a bunch of questions of interest. Jorrizza has asked me to do this aswell, so I did. Here we go:

Can you remember the day that you officially became an atheist?
No, I cannot. I never was a theist for that matter. I got lucky with my parents, they are atheists as well. My father was raised as a Catholic, but he did not want his children to face the same fate. Luckily, my mom was not raised as a theist, so she agreed. They basically gave me the choice of whether I wanted to be an theist or atheist. I chose the latter, since I have the capacity to think clearly and logical. So no, I don’t officially remember the day I became an atheist, but I know that it must have been around the time I learned how to use my brains.
Also note that I don’t have anything against theists, as long as they keep their religion to themselves. Everyone is allowed the choice of a religion in my eyes, but do not bother me with it.

Do you remember the day you officially became an agnostic?
No, assuming that you only become agnostic if you have been a theist and gradually became an atheist, or just are agnostic. I immediately became an atheist. I never really doubted the existence of a God or anything. I just know that there is no God and there is no proof for me to think otherwise.

How about the last time you spoke or prayed to God with actual thought that someone was listening?
I have never spoken to God, nor ever will. I do not like to talk into thin air, assuming that some God might be listening. I only talk to people I can sense.

Did anger towards God or religion help cause you to be an atheist or agnostic?
Oh yes, most definitely. Reading and watching TV about all the crap that religion is causing in this world has definitely caused me to become an atheist. Of course just thinking about God in general made me choose atheism, but watching the news or reading it has played a big role in the decision.

Here is a good one: Were you agnostic towards ghosts, even after you became an atheist?
I have never believed in ghosts or such things. Yes, I have been scared in the dark, but I have never believed in things like ghosts or monsters. Well, that does not include my childhood of course. Every 3-year old believes in monsters.

Do you want to be wrong?
Of course I want to be wrong. It would mean that there is an afterlife (even if I’m unsure if I want to live on after death). However farfetched it might sound to me, it does sound appealing. I also want to be wrong simply because it would allow me to explore a new line of thought. I simply cannot believe in a God without solid proof of its existence. I am a man of reason and logic.
